This place is so weird. The only thing to do here is walk on the dunes. There aren't any real hikes unless you're backpacking, and you can't drive further into the park unless you have an off roading vehicle. Also, mosquitos... so many mosquitos, even in high winds! It was rainy when we were here, so we ended up spending most of our time at the little restaurant on the road just outside the park. IT WAS AMAZING! I would go back just for that little restaurant, and here's why... pie. There's an 83 year-old woman who lives in the area that makes a batch of pies every two days and delivers them to the restaurant, where they are then sold by the piece. It's the best pie I've ever had, and I've had a lot of pie in a lot of places. If you go here, please send me pie.
Would rate the park a 2, but I'm adding two more stars just for the pie.
Loved the Stanley and loved Estes Park. I stayed here on July 4th, and they put on a great show despite the rain.
We found it, and it's a big ass watermelon!
This was one of my favorite activities of my last road trip. My mule's name was Renee. He kept eating grass, but I'd highly recommend him if you're on the market for a good mule.
I enjoyed this cave tour more than Carlsbad. The tour doesn't allow too many people at the same time, and the cave has been well-preserved with minimal carving out for foot paths.
Pretty average campground, SO MANY FLIES. The cave was great, though. I'd go back just for that.
This is a great place to stay for a night if you're on a road trip through the Southwest. Hotel Congress is full of history and (friendly) ghosts. John Dillinger was shot here! They've kept the hotel in mostly vintage condition, so it still has that old-timey feel.
Big side note: Don't stay here (or anywhere on Congress St.) if you're looking for a place to fall asleep early in the night. Hotel Congress is also known as Club Congress, a downstairs club that hosts nightly live shows until about 2:30am. But if you're looking for a place to have a great time, this is it. Plus, you can bar hop for days down Congress St./4th Ave.
This was really stupid, and I loved it.
Don't even bother with Voodoo. Go here, stay here, eat all day.
The ambiance is nothing special for a road trip, but this was one of the best meals I had on my trip. Great cocktails and service too!
