It is an easy and short hike up to the cone. The depth of the cone is surprising, but it's the lava formations that are truly beautiful to observe. Take the time to get in close and discover the amazing variety.
A moderate climb to the top. This view was definitely the highlight of our afternoon in the park.
Glad we made this stop. Great trail and easy walking (do stay on the trail). Enjoy the plant life, dead and alive, large and miniscule. There is a world of beauty at your feet.
Some tips:
1) It is remarkable how quickly the landscape changes as you approach these lava fields. Was glad we made the stop and took the time to look around. Take the time to enjoy it before the park.
2) Check ahead. If you want to hike in the lava tunnels, call first. We were excited about this, but they were all closed. Too much rain, I'm guessing, but they didn't say.
3) Enjoy the hikes. There are easy to moderate climbs. The paths are beautifully laid out, so you get to experience a variety. Do stay on the paths, please.
4) Take some time for plants. Hopefully, you'll get to see some of the amazing flowers. They're tiny, but there's a whole world of beauty to be found if you look.
I don't think I'd make a trip across the country for this one, but if you're on a road trip through Idaho, then this is a must stop.
An unexpected delight right outside the suburbs. It's a little bit off the main highway, but well worth the detour. What a beautiful panorama! A great walkway out to an overlook (perfect for photos). My only regret is that we weren't here for the spring runoff. Don't miss this underrated gem.
Stunning views. Passed over it to go see Shoshone Falls (another must see). Really regret we didn't take the time to stop and take the time to look more besides the drive across, which in and of itself was beautiful.
Beautiful! This is worth the drive and leaving the main highway to see. We came in June so the full beauty of the spring runoff wasn't in play ... even so, a delight.
We didn't cross but simply parked in the shade below the bridge and enjoyed the stunning views. Even if you're just stopping to stretch your legs for a minute, it's a stop worth making to enjoy God's creation and our place in it.
Plan ahead! One of the most iconic falls in the northwest, but plan ahead before your visit.
First, plan your visit taking account of the sun. Try finding a time when you won't be glaring to try and get a good photo or viewing.
There are 2 parking lots, one on the Historic Columbia River Highway that is just next to the entrance; and one off of Interstate 84 with more parking. However ...
The closer parking is limited and will often require a long wait ... or might even spit you down the road where you'll have to drive a few miles before you can turn around and try again.
The Interstate parking lot is easy and there are many spots available, but you will not be allowed to cross under the walkway to the falls unless you have a reservation. Sounds like it is easy and can be done online, but if you wait until you arrive, you might be twiddling your thumbs for a few hours.
Beautiful falls. Lovely hike. Expensive coffee and snacks. But plan ahead.
Stunning! If you're following Google maps from the east, keep driving after it says you've arrived (you're above the falls). The parking lot and trail head is just a bit west.
Not the biggest waterfall in the vicinity (Silver Falls is probably my favorite), but the two tiered falls have a nice unique element.
The trail is nicely kept up, is not difficult to hike for the average visitor, but it isn't an easy stroll if you have bad knees or health issues.
This one is definitely worth your time and a stop.
