We are there now. We drove in after six and parked out of the way. It is in a tall Forrest of pines and other trees. It is the parking lot for The Furnace Town Historical site. Search on it. We had a lot of fun.
Verizon is 2 bars but the Data is very slow.

We stayed 2 years ago and were welcome. 1 year ago we arrived late and parked and were awoken in the early AM by someone pounding on the door saying that we needed to belong to the nature conservancy or something similar and register ahead of time and we had to leave right away.

We were looking for a spot with full hookup to do some repairs and some paperwork. We called and left messages twice and did get called back eventually. Got weekly rate and cash price. There is no problem with just driving in and checking in on the spot.
Big area. Large roomy spots. Most had working power. Most had working water.Since we were the only customers other than the 5 or 6 seasonal or full time, we were offered any spot we liked ("just make sure the water works".) It is a big flat dirt, gravel and weed property in the middle of similar others so the wind really blows through. The owner keeps rescue dogs and some of them bark incessantly. One in particular can be threatening due to her having three pups. The road can be noisy too. No bathroom. 2 working washers, one working dryer. Laundry was dirty. No complaints about the wifi just don't go too far from the entrance end if you want good speed.

For me this is all fine. We are boondockers so the full hookup is great in a primitive sort of situation. I'd pick a spot away from the owners house because of the barking.

We enjoyed this place as a convenient and pretty overnight place. Large level field fifty feet from the road then gravel road goes on to other spots. Didn't check the other spots but you can get farther from the highway if you like.
This area was once burned over and because of that there is flash flood danger when it rains. Some contour plowing was done along with other mitigation and I suspect that it is no longer much of a danger but there are spots that could get muddy so avoid if there is rain in the forecast.
Pros-
Easy access
Field makes turn around with toad easy.
Beautiful mountains all around.
Cons-
Highway nearby
Care should be taken getting from road to field but not bad.
When it has rained or will rain avoid it.
If you mind a cow flop or 10 it might be a problem.

Nice place to overnight before or after using the Bridge Tunnel. It is quieter than most rest stops. There is a lot of extra room that let us pull up to the curb and put slides out without danger. Picnic tables and grass areas. Best of all there is an actual wildlife and park connected to it. There is a butterfly garden, and some fortifications from harbor defense during WWII including a huge naval gun. It connects to a Nature conservancy area with a boat ramp and kayak launch area and miles of walking paths. You might want to plan on 2 days so you can enjoy the park.

We had a hard time believing that we could park there but yes we could. Amazing scenery. Bathrooms open all night. There is a water tap. No dump. Deer. Birds. Interesting people wander about. Can't get closer to trails. Snack bar. Wifi very weak in the lot but inside it is great.

I don't know where to start. We needed a place to stay while the nearby Cummins place emptied out wallet. We picked it because it was near the dealer. What a surprise we will be coming back for a week soon. Too many ++ to list but here are some. Right up against the Dismal Swamp canal, a historical area that sheltered many runaway slaves before the Civil war. Kayaks, canoes and Johnboats are available to explore this canal which had nearly disappeared at one time. This is the best kind of family place in the old tradition.

Camp store, big old friendly dog wandering around, Grandpa sitting on the porch with an extra rocker for you. Boats, boat launch, boat gas, ducks on the pond and inlet. There's a deck over the water for hanging out. Everybody's friendly. Not a busy place. Very Quiet. Lots of character. The facilities work and are adequate. Slightly run down and comfortable place. Dirt or grass parking. No pavement. Did not see a laundry. Did not see the bathrooms but there are some. Good Wifi. There is ATT phone and data, Verizon phone but data weak.

This place is nice. There is a large corral for horses, a tunnel through a mountain you can walk through, a dirt road that goes for a number of miles getting more fun as you progress. We followed with our Jeep through many water crossings and fun sections until faced with a sand covered rock wall that needed a real rock climber to get past.
When it is windy it will be really dusty and when the 4 wheeler turn up it can get noisy. Otherwise great. There is plenty of room near the road for any size rig you have. The sites get smaller until only tents fit. We were there in May and there was water in the stream.
