Ancient, haunted, highly recommended. Pretty warm, take lots of water, not easy to find a parking place, locals don't like tourists around.
A national treasure, completely free, built by one man. 160 ft castle, steep stairs, dark recesses, remarkable great room, high towers, beautiful stained-glass, a thrill and a really worthwhile drive 20 miles from the main freeway.
Arrived at 3:40, the last tour of the day left at 3:30, so out of luck, nothing they could offer us. We went on our way, having seen nothing except the empty 10 mile stretch of blacktop to get there.
It was hot (102 F), humid, dusty, and not at all remarkable, except for the six or so vintage travel trailers, which were cute, but sat on old cracked tires and unattractive blocks. And you couldn't see inside them except if you rented one, which started around $80/night. No thanks! But we walked the dogs, enjoyed some shade trees, and have a nice memory.
