James Peak Protection Area is an moderatly accessible dispersed camping area in Winter Park's backyard. From the GPS coordinates it is approximately 20 minutes to highway 40.

Please note there are many beetle killed trees in the wilderness. Scouting the road without a trailer would be advised as a fallen tree can easily block the one lane road.

Camping in the area requires a permit from the Granby Ranger Station. Please see the picture with the details.

The easiest way to access the dispersed camping is to take FR128 from highway 40. Corona Pass Road is doable from highway 40 as it was recently re-graded, however FR128 is two lanes for the majority of its run.

Once you turn onto Corona Pass Road from FR128 the road does become washboard and one lane. Take it slow and most vehicles will have no issues with the terrain. There is minimal space for passing so the road width is a consideration for trailer size.

While a mid sized Class C can travel and turn around, I would not recommend any trailer larger than 24 feet. One mile beyond the GPS location is a sharp bend in the road with enough space to turn a large rig around if needed. Between the GPS coordinates and this bend there are about 10 dispersed sites.

The sites at the GPS coordinates had 4 bars of Verizon 4G with a download speed of 130mbit. Further along the road the Verizon dipped to 1 bar of 4G.

Camping in the James Peak Protection Area grants you access to numerous trailheads and the ghost town of Corona at the top of the pass. Hiking around the pass allows one to view the Nederland area and mountains over Boulder, Colorado.

Notable hiking trails in the area include James Peak trail, Needle's Eye Tunnel and Devil's Slide Trestle. The area is also used for OHV riding and mountain biking.
