“Like the Eagles Song”
Standin' on the Corner Park is a publicly operated park, commemorating the Eagles-Jackson Browne song "Take It Easy". The park contains a two-story trompe-l'œil mural by John Pugh, and a life-size bronze statue by Ron Adamson of a man standing on a corner with a guitar. The park is surrounded by a wall of bricks, each with a donor's name on it, and a story by each of the donors describing their fondness for Winslow. Until the 1960s, Winslow was a thriving town in northern Arizona just off Route 66. Construction of the $7.7 million bypass around Winslow began soon after 1977. When I-40 bypassed the community many local businesses disappeared, tourism being among the hardest hit. While some local jobs remained (as Winslow is the base of operation for a thousand railroad workers), the local downtown was badly hurt by the influx of national chains (such as Walmart and McDonalds) along the new Interstate Highway to the north of the town. Twenty years passed and Winslow was stuck in a commercial rut. In 1997, the La Posada Hotel (a former Harvey House on the Santa Fe Railroad, long at risk for demolition) was restored and reopened. Listing of La Posada Historic District on the National Register of Historic Places would serve as a first step toward re-awakening the town.
Fun stop to make! Folks in the shop across the street were very kind, Eagles music playing all day. Def make this quick stop and support the folks in Winslow. (Ps- Dar's Diner across the steer gives you the full Rt 66 experience. The waitress was even wearing a poodle skirt and saddle shoes, the good was good too!)
Quick drive off the interstate. We parked right across the street with no problem on a Sunday afternoon. Worth a trip!
Good break from the road. Super easy to find coming from the west, headed east. Take the time and get a photo - and offer to take someone else's.
A must stop. Snap a quick photo, sing a few bars and move on. Love the red truck and how it's the same truck in the mural.
Pull over, get the picture. 5 minutes top. Not worth the drive through Winslow unless you're a very big Eagles fan or stopping at La Posada hotel for lunch and the museum.
You can't drive through and not get a picture here!
A really great idea from a song to immortalize this corner into a piece of Americana. The mural creates a very nostalgic reflection of the "flatbed Ford" which is actually parked on the side street. Worth a quick stop and picture taken with "Easy" the sculpture.
This was a wonderful stop! The scenic corner and nearby historic district were wonderfully nostalgic. Fun photo ops with bronze and wooden statues, at "corner". Be sure to visit the stores nearby and consider making a donation to help the town restore the "corner". The town needs economic support, so stop in and rest a spell! I'd love to stay at former Fred Harvey Hotel La Posada sometime!
We loved this stop more than any other on our trip across the US from Florida to California. Lots of nostalgia and the soda shoppe was so good at lunch we stayed and came back for breakfast! Yum!
Awesome photo op!!!!
