Confirmed by 7 users | Last reported on October 21, 2023Large grassy area with scattered trees. Very easy access for all RV types 14 ft tall and under.
There are several camping spots clearly marked with fire rings farther in, but they don't want any motor vehicles that far in any longer. We were very nicely asked to park closer to the entrance the next time we stop here again. There was a small travel trailer that was ticketed for staying over the 14 day max while we were there.
Dump at Loves, just 15 minutes away, with the cleanest showers!
Stars at night were awesome, and we felt very comfortable staying here. Will definitely use this stop again.

This is a great little camping spot, right off Interstate 40, that is just far enough from the highway for some peace and privacy, but not too far for getting and getting out. Easy for big rigs to pull in and out, and turn around.
There is a large section of land, just off the exit, and behind some trees that you can camp overnight on your way to some place else. If you want to stay longer, you can follow the road a bit farther, and find some single camping spaces, for more privacy and quietness.
It was a little trashy in some areas. People passing through, who don't care, left trash and wide open views of their outdoor toilet practices. So, check your site before you set up camp.
The views were great. There were signs of wildlife coming through, but we missed them.

About 30 miles west of Flagstaff, Arizona, a bit past Williams on I-40 is the Welch Road Free Camping Area. I stopped there and saved some money. Yes, I am a cheapskate. This campsite was conveniently located just off the highway. Check out my video if you want to see an overview of this camping venue https://youtu.be/VQ0MgFRKpQs

Pulled in at night. Had the whole area to ourselves. Didn’t hear the freeway all night. About 8 o’clock a maintenance vehicle drove by. Stayed in the winter and ran the generator alll night to power our ceramic heater. Easy freeway access.

Don't get discouraged if you have to drive in a couple of miles. Our site was actually a loop and sat high on a knoll. We could just see Hwy. 40 traffic although we didn't hear it.

We really enjoyed our Welch Road site. We have a 34 ft diesel pusher with toad. It’s the monsoon season at the moment and it rained every day starting around 1pm to about 3pm. The road in has smaller than usual ruts, but it’s not too bad...just went around them. Except for another Motorhome, we pretty much had the place to ourselves. Even with all the rain, there was never a worry of getting stuck. You can get far enough from I-40 and not have a problem with noise. We took a toad trip to Williams AZ, 11 miles to the east. They are doing construction on I-40 east and it eventually goes down to one lane. With the rain and the slow down, it took us about 30 minutes to go 11 miles. Also, if you need supplies and are in Williams, you better bring some extra money...it ain’t cheap.

It was easy access to this area. Took Welch Road exit off of I 40. When we arrived there were lots of campers. We took the road to the right, right after you cross the cattleguard. Had a large level Camp Ground with lots of juniper trees. Was well shaded. There were other campers all around us but not too close. Beautiful skies and sun set. 13 miles into Williams. There is a Safeway there, bought gas at Circle K, filled up 10 gallons of water at the Safeway. Lots of roads for ATV riding. This campground is nothing But nice, free, and the spot where we stayed was very level. Peaceful although there was quite a bit of highway noise but we sort of got used to it and didn’t hear it does match. Would definitely come back if needed.

Stayed mid Feb ‘19. This is a big area flat area suitable for any size vehicle. Easy access from the highway. Only 1 other small RV already there when we arrived about 7pm. Truck noise from the highway slowed around 11pm then picked up again between 5&6

We've stayed at this location twice and both times have been good experiences. After entering the dirt road, go straight for the more frequently used and open area, probably better for big rigs. Smaller rigs can head to the left to find several quieter spots along the left-hand side of the road. There is some noise from the highway but it is fairly quiet at night.
The cell phone service is good and I was able to work during the weekdays.
The best part about this spot is the miles of forest roads open to exploring. There are some historic railroad sites just to the north.
