“Museum of the Arizona Cowboy”
Rex Allen was born on a ranch close to Willcox, Arizona on December 31, 1920. At a young age, Rex discovered a love for music and received his first guitar. He enjoyed entertaining and would often go into town and play for tips in front of the barber shop. Rex Allen would grow to be a popular singer and actor known as “The Arizona Cowboy”. When singing cowboys such as Gene Autry and Roy Rogers were all the rage in American westerns, Republic Pictures gave Allen a screen test and quickly put him under contract. Allen starred as himself in nineteen Hollywood western movies. He wrote and recorded several songs, many of which were featured in his films. His film career was cut short with the popularity of westerns fading by the mid 1950’s. Rex Allen has the distinction of making the last singing movie western in 1954.
