“Favorite spot for hikers and bird watchers”
Half-mile beach separates Watch Hill's Little Narragansett bay from the ocean. Favorite spot for hikers and bird watchers. Provides year-round habitat for a variety of species. Napatree Point, often referred to simply as "Napatree", is a long sandy spit created by a geologic process called longshore drift. Up until the Hurricane of 1938, Napatree was sickle-shaped and included a 1.5-mile long northern extension called Sandy Point. Napatree now extends 1.5 miles westward from the business district of Watch Hill, a village in Westerly, Rhode Island forming a protected harbor. It is the southernmost and westernmost point of mainland Rhode Island.
Reviews
If you’re looking for something off the beaten path, Napatree Point Beach might be your ideal spot. There is very little parking and no amenities, but that also means it is far less crowded than other beaches nearby.
It’s not the easiest beach to get to — you’ll need to climb a sand path through the dunes — but the ocean views that greet you just beyond the hill are worth it.
Napatree Point is popular with birdwatchers and nature lovers, as its seclusion makes it a peaceful home for wildlife. If you’re hoping for a quiet time in nature, save the Napatree Point Conservation Area as an option.
We think this is one of the best beaches in Rhode Island!
One of the beaches on the Rhode Island coast. It was okay, but not my favorite. There was a trash can at the entrance way. The waves were white capping when we were there (early November.) The weather was a lil dreary, so we didn't get to explore.
The massive old cement remains of Fort Mansfield are at the very tip of Napatree overlooking New York's Fisher's Island and Stonington Connecticut Harbor. It formerly protected the entrance to Long Island Sound during the Spanish American War (1898) but by World War 1 1914 it was already obsolete. Still the fort is fun to explore. But it's best to explore in winter time since it still boasts a formidable defense: Fort Mansfield is surrounded by poison ivy!
Beautiful beach, perfect for walking. On a clear day can see Long Island in distance and across to Stonington, CT. Often see seals basking in the sun. Several osprey nests have been built along the beach. Quiet, out of the way spot.
