Confirmed by 3 users | Last reported on January 22, 2024The roads within the wildlife area are dirt roads, some were perfectly flat and easy to drive and others would need a 4WD vehicle. As with many boondocking areas it is best to unhook your vehicle and explore the area until you find your ideal spot. Some spots have rock made firepits, some spots are nice and clean, other spots can be full of broken glass (a little too much partying on the weekends maybe), and some sites down by the lake are down a steep hill and a bumpy road. So check carefully and drive carefully. The area can be crowded in the winter, mainly with fishermen but the area is so large it is possible to find a nice quiet flat area just off a flat road with no one around and fabulous views. There are some wonderful sites right along the lake but those quickly fill with the fishermen. The area is also home to lots of 4WD trails so there are many people there with a quad or ORV (Off-Road Vehicle). The closet shopping is in Wenden, about an hour and a half drive, so come prepared. The Ranger Station at Alamo Lake State Park, about a 30 minute drive, had some basics such, as ice cream and snacks, at their general store. The area has lots of wild burros and coyotes running again so you will hear the hee-hawing in the middle of the night.

Paved road until last 10-12 miles, turns to a maintained dirt road. Took a 35’ class A with a Jeep on the back in with no problems to end of Wickenberg road, able to find a nice beach site with open water, good swimming and kayaking. A lot of fishermen in boats trolling, lake is well known for bass. Nice and secluded beaches and peninsulas, due to location, limits people camping close by, good for a holiday weekend. This is strictly boondocking, you bring the comforts. Small store at ranger station in park area for fishing supplies and ice (about 10 miles away).

Stayed here as part of one leg of a trip Pre-running the Arizona Peace Trail. It is a hell of a long way about 1/2 a tank from anywhere that has fuel. Which put me almost at fuel bingo right from the start. This is a very barren and windy place.

Really fun spot. Beautiful views of the lake and surrounding mountains. Great fishing. Full 3G ATT cell service. Only drawbacks are it was very busy the weekend we were there but it might have had something to do with the nearby state park campground being closed. If you want to find a spot close to the water I bet you’ll have to show up early in the week (Monday-Wednesday). It’s pretty far off the beaten path and it’s probably 5-10 miles of dirt road to get out there. Other than these considerations it was a pretty cool place.

We really loved staying here. It’s very quiet most of the time. Great place for side by side vehicles we saw them out in the desert. We stayed in campsite C spot 20 and it was really nice. Great views of the lake at our site. The only weird thing was the campfire for our site was further down away from our RV and picnic table. Where other sites had them closer by. We would stay here again.

It rained the whole time we were here, but we still rode the buggy! We will come back and hopefully it is sunny. We came in with a Class c pulling a trailer and had no problems finding a place to camp. The only noise at night was the burros and the coyotes!
