“Remembering the Legacy of Frederick Douglas”

Born into slavery, Douglass escaped to spend his life fighting for justice and equality for all people. His tireless struggle, brilliant words, and inclusive vision of humanity continue to inspire and sustain people today. The Frederick Douglass National Historic Site was established in 1988 as a National Historic Site, the site preserves the home and estate of Frederick Douglass, one of the most prominent African Americans of the 19th century. Douglass lived in this house, which he named Cedar Hill, from 1877 until his death in 1895. Perched high on a hilltop, the site also offers a sweeping view of the U.S. Capitol and the Washington D.C. skyline.

Our docent Kerry was excellent. She represented the National parks very well. The house is kept up really well. Amazing views on the hill. Fredrick Douglas was a wealthy man family man.

This is a free museum/tour which is awesome but the norm in DC. It is a little far from the mall/main tourist locations but allows for a more real vision of all of DC, not just the touristy districts. The docents are knowledgable and fun and the views from the house are beautiful.
