Sounds too good to be true, but it's not. We arrived early evening and got a prime spot on a tiny peninsula, giving us water views from the windows of three sides of our Airstream, along with a soft sandy beach for our kiddo and pup to run and play on.
The story goes like this - Jim, the owner of the property, bought the land and the old ice rink on it. He plops his trailer down on it and starts offering free campsites, right there on tiny but mighty Sunday Lake. Right in town, but you wouldn't know it, it's quiet and serene. You can see the city park campground across the lake, with packed in campers, but our spot felt secluded in comparison.
Only so many hookups, but water AND electric were available, so arriving early eve is advised. Otherwise there is dry parking along the ice rink or on the parking pad.
It felt safe, comfortable, and quiet. Not buggy until true dusk, and a soft breeze coming off the water the whole time. It felt like a dream. Highly recommend!
Such a wonderful spot to overnight on our way out of Michigan and into Wisconsin. We got in late so we just pulled into an open space in the dark and immediately crawled in and got some shuteye, but the next morning, we saw a handful of spots with electric hookups and one totally prime spot on a little peninsula behind the building surrounded by water. The town of Wakefield is quiet and safe, and the lake this spot is on is beautiful.
Service was great for both AT&T and Verizon.
The place had electric and water and a spectacular view. The camp host was very nice and it was a very pleasant experience.
There is a donation box on the sign for the campground. The park is on the property with an ice rink building built in 1939. The owner is very nice. He has business in town but comes out every night to work on property. There is electric and water but no dump station as the owner could not get permits. The bathroom is in the ice rink and is just like a home shower, wonderful! You can see the sunset and sunrise over the lake.
If there is an empty spot you can park in it. The spots are marked by the electric boxes. He allowed us a 4 day stay and told us of local sites to see. Lake of the clouds was beautiful. We drove 13 miles out of our way and were very glad we did.
We lucked out and got the site on the peninsula. Absolutely beautiful! Water and electric hook ups, no dump station. Perfect Tmobile service. Swimming right out your front door. This place is a gem. Donations are accepted!
Stopped here on the way from Michigan’s UP enroute to Wisconsin. Stayed behind rink building had water and electric. Seems to be other longer term RVs here. Beautiful lakeside spot.
This was a nice spot by a lake - lovely sunsets. We were the only other van there apart from the guy that owns it. 2 RVs came late and left early. As we stayed 2 nights we ended up donating about $5 for the land and flowing water (also has electrical plugs). The owner didn’t bother us and I’m sure he wouldn’t mind if you didn’t donate. Some bugs and dog walkers.
Great free campsite owned by a private person. I spoke him him in Mid-may. He said he provides it free of charge for overnight RV parking. He said if you want a little more time then just call the number on the sign. He does have a donation box for those who would like to help him defeat a little of the costs. Verizon cell service was okay. I did submit a video with drone footage if you want to check out the campground.
Loved this spot for one night. It’s a grass lot located right on the lake. Perfect to put the kayak in, let the pup swim and watch the sunset. Perfect for vans, RVs, tents, cars. No bathrooms. Looks like there was one or two electrical hook up spots. I believe there was running water, we did not use it though. Full service for Verizon users. Overall, a great spot to stop for a night for no cost (there is a place to put donations!)
I found a site right on Lake Superior for $20 a night. It looked great until I found this private property, open to overnights. Free is better when you’re just passing through.
The sign now says “PRIVATE OVERNIGHT CAMPING,” so I wouldn’t normally have stopped. But there were several other campers here, and plenty of Campendium reviews saying it was open to overnighters.
If you’re looking for a silent place, this isn’t it. The campground is just off US-2, and right on Highway 28, a fairly major route, so the trucks get rolling early in the morning. But the price made up for it.
I made a quick dinner, got some shuteye, put a few bucks in the donation box and am back on the road.
PS - T-Mobile has five bars of 5G here!
