“Home to several Wolly Mammoth fossils”
The Waco Mammoth Site sits on more than 100 acres of wooded parkland along the Bosque River. Surrounded by oak, mesquite and cedar trees, the site offers an escape from the modern world and provides a glimpse into the lives of Columbian mammoths. On a spring day in 1978, Paul Barron and Eddie Bufkin embarked on a search for arrowheads and fossils near the Bosque River. To their surprise, the men stumbled upon a large bone eroding out of a ravine. Recognizing the unusual nature of the find, they removed the bone and took it to the Strecker Museum at Baylor University for examination.
Very informational. The staff did a wonderful job of educating the public. The exhibits were inside a large enclosure, which was very nice on the 40 degree day we visited. Their gift shop very nice. The trails through the woods were well groomed. If you are a more adventurous hiker, this might not be a challenge for you.
We learned so much. Our guide was terrific. We plan on keeping up with the rest of the dig. Now we feel a part of it. Amazing to be this close to amazing history.
Very interesting National Monument. Really enjoyed it park ranger was very knowledgeable and very helpful. Short easy walk to get to the site and a really good tour to take
excellent place! very reasonable admission price and great tour guides
Can't believe I've lived in Texas my whole life and didn't know this was here. We packed a lunch, took the tour and my kids participated in the junior ranger activities. Fun stop.
Very interesting stop. This has been declared a national park. The tour made it a little longer than I really like to stop but it's the only way to see the fossils and it was well worth the time.
If you're visiting Waco, this is a good stop. We learned some cool facts about the ice age in TX and got to see the bones as they were found originally.
