“historic mansion, inn, & fine dining”
Anchuca, a Choctaw Indian word meaning "happy home," is one of the most significant antebellum homes in Vicksburg, Mississippi. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, this impressive Greek Revival landmark represents the first columned mansion in Vicksburg and the first historic home to become one of Mississippi's finest bed and breakfast inns. Surrounded by stately live oaks and located in the heart of Vicksburg's Historic District, Anchuca was built in 1830 by local politician J. W. Mauldin. In 1847, Victor Wilson, a local coal and ice merchant added the columned front and the two-story dependency in back. Standing proud through the Siege of Vicksburg in 1863, the house was put into service providing shelter for those who had suffered severely through the War. Café Anchuca offers seasonal, southern gourmet delicacies, such as Tuscan Grilled Bruschetta, Anchuca Seafood Gumbo, and Honey Ginger Filet Mignon, Thursday through Saturday for lunch and supper. The Garden Room sets the perfect atmosphere for casual, yet elegant meals. Join a co-worker for lunch, celebrate your birthday or bring the family for lunch on Sunday. Whatever the occasion, be sure to top off your dining experience with one of our signature desserts. (It’s enough for two if you‘re willing to share.) Cocktails, reserve wines, and domestic beer are available. Reservations are appreciated as seating is limited.
We stayed here for a night in the Wilson Room. It was beautiful, comfortable, and easily the best and most unique B&B we've stayed at anywhere. Vicksburg is a bit off the beaten path, but I was glad we went here. Unfortunately, the restaurant was not open for dinner when we arrived, but Chris, one of the owners, gave us some great suggestions within walking distance. The breakfast in the morning was delicious (thanks for introducing us Canadians to cheese grits!), and the history of the house is fascinating. I'm glad I found out it was haunted *after* our stay... ;)
