“home to a variety of bass and perch”
Vernonia Lake was once the mill pond of the Oregon-American Lumber Company. The lake is home to Bass, Crappie, Perch and Bluegill, and is stocked each year with Rainbow Trout. In its day, the Oregon-American Lumber Co. Mill was the largest all-electric lumber mill in the world. In 1957 when it was no longer cost effective to operate the mill it was closed. The mill literally went out in a blaze of glory when the planer shed was burned up as part of the 1961 movie “Ring of Fire” staring David Janssen, Joyce Taylor, Frank Gorshin. Remnants of some of the old buildings can still be seen. If you’re interested in old logging history the Vernonia Pioneer Museum has more information on the mill and the history of Vernonia.
