“Preserving America's Flying Heritage”
Named in honor of the former vice president, Garner Field opened in 1941 as a World War II primary pilot training school. The field’s Hangar #1 now houses the Aviation Museum at Garner Field, which preserves military and civil aviation history. Restored and flying World War II aircraft include a Fairchild PT-19 cadet training plane and an L-4 Piper target spotting plane. Artifacts range from the 1944 USS Uvalde’s ship compass to the fur-lined uniform of a civilian who taught military cadets how to fly.
