Confirmed by 1 users | Last reported on May 26, 2021Whiteman Bench is a great place to boondock while you visit Bryce Canyon National Park and Red Canyon. It’s about 13 miles to the entrance of Bryce Canyon and less than that to Red Canyon. It’s a secluded, quiet spot in the woods and you will probably see pronghorns roaming around the area.
The main forest service road (FS 87) to Whiteman Bench (FS 88) is gravel but in really good condition. There’s a trash and recycle dumpster at the entrance of FS 87. FS 88 is on the bumpy side with a handful of potholes. There’s a deep ditch at the entrance of FS 88, which may be a problem for travel trailers and class As – we tow a 25 ft. long 5th wheel and made it but we had to take it really slowly and carefully.
We wouldn’t recommend any rigs longer and definitely not taller (we’re 12 ft.) than us to trying to drive into Whiteman Bench. While there are 6 camping spots, they are not very large and most of them will require some maneuvering to get in or out of them. Keep in mind when staying here during the shoulder months that the elevation is almost at 8,000 ft. So freezing nights and snow won’t be impossible.
Bryce Canyon National Park has water and dumping, along with a more extensive recycling center than what’s at FS 87. It’s probably a good idea to stock up on groceries before heading here, there’s not much in town.
Cell signal jumped throughout the day between 1 - 2 bars LTE.

The map brings you to one spot that I think used to have a road to more dispersed camping, but it’s blocked off by a fence. You could maybe fit 3-4 cars in the first pull off area. If you go further down the road, there are a few more nice spots. Pretty forest surrounding you, very quiet. Minimal cell signal - had one bar on the weekdays and no signal on the weekend.

I stayed probably in the spot last reviewer did. Very quiet with coyote serenade in the morning. Plenty of firewood but dry conditions do not warrant using the rock fire ring (for me). Nice two-track road for bicycling.
I can’t imagine much more than a small TT getting up here and the spots aren’t that big. Easy to find using the map. There are a couple of sites down the main road that could handle bigger rigs but it would be luck if one was available. Short, dusty drive into town and the park.
