This hotel is an iconic spot without a doubt. The sign is one of the more famous neon ones on the rt 66 trip. Something I learnt about the route while I did it this summer was that the best part of the history is the people that run these places and the Blue Swallow was no disappointment in that regard! The management were absolutely fantastic and have original photos and awesome stories ready to tell you!
When the neon sign is lit up at night you can see the Blue Swallow from a mile away! It's a great example of a true "motor inn" complete with little garages painted with car movie scenes. There's always a few old cars around to give it that extra vintage vibe, and the owners are nice and hospitable. Of the hotels in Tucumcari it's in my top 3 for sure.
Rates are reasonable, but the fact the place is well-known often means a slightly higher rate than some other hotels in town. It's well worth checking out and at the very least getting a picture of the classic neon sign! Wi-Fi in my room didn't work, but there was free coffee in the motel office which was a nice way to start my day. Plenty of gifts in the gift shop as well.
My family and I stayed here. The owners went out of their way to make the evening an experience to remember for our children. Everything is very clean and tidy. Loved the history and current "Cars movie" information sharers by the owners. If we ever travel that way again, we will make a point to stay longer.
My mom and I rested up here on our Route 66 road trip. We were traveling from Chicago to Arizona to spend Christmas with my brother. I loved this place. The owners were friendly, the beds were cozy, the heating system was definitely fun (I was secretly delighted to see the old types of furnaces used back in the day...even if I did have to get up to adjust the "heat" and I literally mean flame that night lol), the bathroom was lovely tiny (but so is mine in Detroit...that's just how bathrooms were made back then). Overall, it was very clean, very homey. I enjoyed our theme room and my mom took pictures of the inside of the garages (painted with scene from the movie "Cars"). When it got dark, I took my camera out and took some *amazing* photos of the beautiful, well-maintained iconic neon sign. I think supporting these places is so worth it. They had fresh hot coffee brewed in the office the next morning available for us. We each bough some swag; I purchased a little white snow cap with "Route 66" on it and a "Blue Swallow" travel mug (which is sitting right in front of me, use it almost daily). I would definitely stay there again. So much history an they are so willing to share!
we stayed here twice on our trip to the Grand Canyon. Once on our way to and once on our way home! The staff/owners make you feel so welcome and at home! Its very clean and well kept! great place to socialize with other travelers! Be sure to say hi to their pets Bessy, Obi, and max!!! Obi is super welcoming!!! Can't wait to go again!!!
Easily the quietest and most comfortable stay of my cross country trip. The rooms are clean and it's a relaxing place. The chairs out front of each room are great to just chat with other guests or watch the road.
This place is awesome! The rooms are amazingly retro!
Clean and comfortable beds, along with welcoming staff make this an amazing stopover!

Loved my stay here. I went with my 9-month-old son in August, 2014 and the staff couldn't have been friendlier. The room was incredibly clean and I loved how it was a bit dated, as in the furnishings haven't really been updated in decades. I think it added to its charm. Great location, close to Kix on 66 (awesome coffee joint) and close to Del's (great for dinner). I'll definitely stay there again on my next Route 66 adventure. Ooh, don't forget to get pics in front of the neon sign when it's lit up at night.
We stayed here three years ago when my wife and I and another couple went to the Southwest for a vacation. The Blue Swallow was one of the real highlights of our trip. We got to spend some time with the owners who are great people and loved every aspect of the motel.
