“Famous Tufa Formation”
The Trona Pinnacles are an unusual geological feature in the California Desert National Conservation Area. The unusual landscape consists of more than 500 tufa spires, some as high as 140 feet, rising from the bed of the Searles Lake basin. It has been designated by the Department of the Interior as a National Natural Landmark in 1968 to protect one of the nation's best examples of tufa formation.
