“allegedly haunted abandoned asylum”
The Traverse City State Hospital was built in 1885 in the Kirkbride style of insane asylums. It's an architecturally impressive building that's been abandoned for quite some time, but still retains her style. It was in operation for over a hundred years, serving over 50,000 mentally-ill patients who suffered from a variety of ailments, using what were considered "state-of-the-art" experimental treatments such as electro-shock therapy and lobotomies, among other "treatments". Today, the abandoned building is a visited by tour groups and urban explorers who frequent the tunnels that go under the asylum. There are a few paranormal legends surrounding the hospital, including the "Hippie Tree", which some people believe is a tree on the hospital's property that if you walk around it you'll enter a portal to hell, should you feel so inclined... There are plans to redevelop the building. - Roadtrippers
It’s not abandoned. They’ve turned at least part of it into a shopping area. It’s charming. I’m glad they didn’t let the building fall to ruin. It’s such gorgeous architecture.
