“A tented hostel in a ghost town”
Located in the historic Terlingua Ghost Town, Las Ruinas is a fun "plain to fancy" tent and camping destination. Betsy and Pat welcome you to Big Bend Campsite, Terlingua Las Ruinas. if you’re looking for a fun place to stay in the Big Bend – Terlingua area, you’re in the right place. We’re in a “dark sky” zone, so the stars are really big and bright. There is solar lighting along the walkways, but you should bring a flash light and shoes that are good for hiking. Big Bend National Park, Big Bend Ranch State Park, River Road scenic drive, Mexico, river rafting, are all nearby. The campsite is located in the Terlingua Ghost Town behind The Boathouse Restaurant, just a short walk from restaurants, coffee, internet, and the famous Terlingua Porch. There are two bathrooms and a shower on site.
It's back open and under new ownership!!! They have a few pre-set up tents (including fancy ones with real beds) and sites where you can set up your own tent. Check their website for listings and the like!
This place DOES NOT HAVE TENTS FOR YOU TO STAY IN! And there is no old school bus with a shower and restrooms. So don't go there expecting to stay in a hostel and not worrying about bringing a tent. YOU NEED TO BRING YOUR OWN TENT! It's not a hostel. Frankly, I don't think they should even use the word hostel in their name. It is a CAMPING GROUND. Bring your own tent and expect to be roughing it.
The tents, school bus and outdoor kitchen are all gone now, as MaryBiediger noted. It's really more just a patch of desert now. Probably better to go camp in the State or National Park, unless you really want to be in Terlingua.
As of October, 2015, Terlingua Las Ruinas is under new management. There are tents to stay in with comfy beds, memory foam mattresses, rugs, chairs, hammocks... flush toilets and great shower on site.
