Upon arriving in Taos, New Mexico we found that the RV park we were hoping / planning to stay at, the Enchanted Moon RV Park, wasn’t exactly in Taos. At all. We drove around looking for the park, which according to our GPS was only a mile from the main plaza and downtown area, and found ourselves on a skinny dirt road who’s terminus, instead of dumping us in the alleged park, put us in a tight corner crossing a small and shaky bridge. We nearly lost our sewage tank.

Discovering that said park was actually in a completely different town, we vied for the Taos RV Park (not to be confused with the Taos Valley RV Park, just up the road, and significantly more wonderful). This one was the cheapest in town for a week’s stay with full hookups, and even though it was half a mile further from town, we went for that option anyway. Taos has a great little bus system, particularly for how small the town is, which runs every 30 – 60 minutes during the day (but try and catch a bus home after 7pm and you’ll find yourself with a 3.6 mile walk from town back to the park, which we did several times on purpose for the exploratory exercise of it).

When we arrived, the owner was sitting on the front porch of the office with another patron, and they pulled out three extra chairs and chatted us up for half an hour or so as we registered for our stay. Both of the men were veterans and they applauded Tristan for wearing his paratroopers t-shirt (which was a present from his Uncle Zack, an ROTC man). The owner apparently built the park himself, and he didn’t do a bad job.

The park is basically a large gravel lot, and the spaces are quite close together. For some reason he had everyone in the same row, even though the park was essentially empty and there were two other rows that we could have spread out in. A playground sat in the corner closest to the highway, it’s swingset roped off and locked, a long time apparently having passed since any children enjoyed it’s presence. In the back corner there was a teepee that you could rent, were you inclined to sleep Indian style during your stay.

Across the street, a busy highway actually, the Full Belly Deli serves up delicious and very affordable soups and sandwiches, with plenty of variety and veggie options, and the food was fresh and quite healthy. A gas station and a liquor store are in the immediate vicinity, and if you head away from town, down over the hill, there is an amazing little Mexican-style village with a restaurant, a bar, some jewelry stores and a naturally-built (ie, hay bails and mud) church. This little treasure was one of my favorite parts of Taos.

When we found out about the other RV park up the road, we decided to spend our second week there, and to be completely honest, that park is drastically more beautiful and useful, having a laundry, propane and even free coffee and cookies.
