The online booking process is painless and the staff are great. You are right on the water at American Lake, but there are designated locations to go swimming, so you can't necessarily swim at a lake front spot.
The spots are shaded and the woods are dense which tends to block cell service a little. Wifi is available at the common area, but if you have a cell booster for your rig you'd have a better time here if you need to stay connected. You are close to the highway and you do hear a little road noise during the day but its not too bad.
Kid friendly and safe. I'll continue to use this location until the Army moves me on.

Access for military ID card holders from I-5 through the North fort gate. Parking for RVs while you register in the outdoor rec store. Campground road is tight with lots of overhanging branches. Excellent laundry, bathroom and shower facility.
Excellent AT&T cell service, no problem streaming. Several HDTV channels were available.

This park has the potential to be a 5 star very easy. However, the yard maintenance of the sites are poor at best. The grass in our site was top of chin high. The black berry bushes had to be cut back in order to not having the rig touching them. My biggest complaint is low hanging trees and trees on the sides that desperately need to be cut back. We ended up with some good scratches because of these branches. When we asked the staff on a couple of occasions they just said they were having issues with landscaping services. 2 people and one day worth of trimming and it would be tip top. But right now you risk scratching your rig up. Verizon had 2 bars and had about 15mb up. Very quite park while we were here. At the time of this review they had 4 washing and 4 dryers and 3 of the dryers were out if order. They ran but only cold air.

General Impression:
Awesome campground on a serene lake setting with mix It has a wooded layout, close proximity to the Adventure Center, and lovely campground feel.
Cost $30
Campsite: We choose our site for its proximity to the entrance / exit as well as to the common area facility. Generally Private site with grassy area. Located on an active military base with aircrafts running drills overhead sometimes shaking the TT and a train that honks its horn that can be heard inside the RV.
Campsite Level: greatly depends on the campsite. Ours (#206) was one of the most level sites for the 30 ft RV, required leveling blocks on one side.
Campsite Type: asphalt - back in pull but some are pull through
Full / Partial hookup: 50 OR 30 – double check the site before you reserve
Picnic table at our site: yes, new looking composite tables that are handicap accessible
Grill: yes and a fire ring with a grill as well
Wifi: no, not at site. Available in common area, but even Starlink and Verizon struggled to perform.
Starlink Speed test: from what I read Down 1.6Mpbs and Up 2.8 Mbps
Verizon Speed test: Down 38Mpbs and Up 3.5 Mbps
Propane fill: yes
Amenities: some of the common areas are locked
Bathrooms: yes
Showers: yes
Dumpster easily located: yes - multiple
Laundry: 3 washers and 4 dryers, $2.00 Wash and $1.50 Dryer
Pool: no, but fishing and kayaking in the lake with rental facilities at the Adventure Center / Camp store
Playground: no
Other facilities: Climbing wall that was closed. MWR desk at the Adventure Center for ticket purchase to local attractions.
Dog friendly:
Location and size of area: no off-leash areas in the campground
Pick up bags and trash can stations: yes multiple throughout
Camp store:
The camp store had limited camp store items but tons of adventure items. Fishing gear and hiking gear with a small amount of groceries. Firewood available for purchase at the camp store or at the commissary.
Camp staff interactions:
Very pleasant staff.
Additional info:
Common areas are open from 05:30-22:00 daily. Multiple facilities close by on base including grocery, quick food options, exchange, and fuel. Only 1 facility on base has diesel. There are also 2 fam camps on this base so double check before reserving.
One of the worse military Fam/Travel camps we have ever stayed at. Even with a pull -through reservation, they still put our 38foot 5th wheel in a back in while every pop-up camper gets a pull through. Our 30amp electrical plug was installed upside down. Front office said they had to put in a work order to fix it and gave us a plastic bag to cover it so the rain wouldn’t short out our connection.
All sites are EXTREMELY overgrown and branches/vines hit our camper (in our site and while driving through). We asked to borrow clippers and they stated we can’t cut our own branches due to endangered species in the area! They said they would put in another work order to trim branches. We went to the bx and bought our own sheers to clip the branches ourselves. Meanwhile millions of pine needles fell onto our camper and was awful trying to clean off our slides. Even the main dump area is covered with trees and will for sure scrape your camper. No need to allow such overgrowth in a campsite that charges fees.
2 bathrooms near us were condemned and we had to drive to bathrooms/laundry. One shower was inoperable and change machine was broken in laundry room.
Save yourselves the headache and stay on McChord FamCsmp. You’ll have a much more enjoyable experience.
Nice military campground. The RV sites are spacious and the park is heavily wooded so there is a lot of shade and privacy. It is located on the bank of American lake and some sites have access to the lake, but there is no public beach access point at the campground. The staff here was friendly and helpful, when the front office is closed, there is a camp host who can help with any concerns you have. My only complaint is the laundry facilities are in need of repair/replacement. There are two buildings with four dryers each, at one point during our stay the campground was down to 2 of 8 working dryers. They have since fixed several of the broken dryers, but I understand from talking to other guests this has been on ongoing issues. Other than this one issue it has been a really nice stay and we will definitely be back.
