Confirmed by 2 users | Last reported on May 25, 2022We stopped here between Hot Springs NP in AR and Ft. Worth and were pleasantly surprised. Nice sites on a number of loops (we were in Deer Haven) with lots of sites on the lake. And in fact, deer wandered through the site, we took tons of pics of the huge oak trees in our site and were treated to a magnificent sunset on a glassy lake.
While we had it completely to ourselves in early Feb, it's big enough that my guess is that it's pretty popular in the summer for fishing and possibly other water sports.
This was an unexpected gem for us and worth a little diversion onto the country roads north of I-30.

To be honest I had visited this park about 15 years ago, but we stayed in a cabin with two small children and I really dont remember the trip at all. This time we were in our motor home and I spent time exploring the park and I was really surprised by what I found! This park is huge! three separate areas for bank fishing, two boat ramps, cabins, screen shelters and tons of great campsite for tents and RVs.
I have posted a 20 min video of our visit under the blogs tab.

S Sulphur Campground is like many of our TX State Park camping experiences - the sites are fairly large, spread out, and offer natural views. In hindsight, we would have done better with a back-in site, but #71 was relatively level, if only a little too acute of a loop for a 40' fifth wheel. All of the sites in our area were clean concrete pads and our water/electric worked well. The campground is large, had well maintained roads, and offers a number of trails and places to fish while enjoying the beautiful scenery of the lake and woods. While we were only passing through the area, I could easily see spending a couple of weeks camped here.
Our T-Mobile service worked fairly well with the booster, not so much without.

First time here, and we really enjoyed it. Campsites are spacious and level parking for those with RVs and campers. A lot of sites right on the water. Shaded picnic tables are sporadic. Some sites have shaded tables and some don’t. Site 11 does have a shaded table and a walking path to the lake.

This is one of two Texas State parks on Lake Cooper.
A good distance from I-30 plus some two lane roads to get to the park.
The park is very quiet.
Best days are Sunday to Thursday.
Busy days are Friday and Saturday.

I was a little concerned at first on Thursday when I set up my trailer that the next spot over was right on top of mine. The fire rings were only 10 feet apart. My view was mainly the neighboring picnic table. Soon later a park host came around to flip the adjoining site flag to "reserved". He said that unless both sites are reserved by the same party, the other site was marked as taken. So I had 2 sites to myself all weekend. It rained most of Thursday and Friday so the park was not very full. If they had been packed, I may have had no privacy at all.
I saw several deer, but they quickly pranced away.

This is another well managed Texas state park with big sites, good power and water, fairly level concrete site pads, and friendly helpful rangers and hosts. Site 13 is right on the lake. We could launch our kayaks from our site and then just leave them by the water until we wanted to use them again. Lots of nice hiking trails of varying difficulty. We stayed here 10 days and enjoyed the peace and quiet - even on the weekends when it was full. Almost no one here during the week in November. Verizon coverage is spotty, but good at the campsite.

We stayed 3 nights in November and were 1 of only a handful of people there on Mon-Thu. Deer Haven campground lived up to it’s name. We probably saw 10+ deer everyday. Sites were large and clean. Bathrooms were also very clean. Overall the area almost seemed very new. Nothing seemed worn out or run down. Good ATT cell service. We were able to stream video to our phones with no issues. Would stay again.

Texas SP don’t allow on-line reservations within 24 hours of your planned stay. However, on site rangers at the park’s hq are very accommodating and helpful in locating the perfect last minute site. Ours was #68 (back in with w/e) with no neighbors to our right and a short stroll to the lake shore. This is a huge SP with segregated units for tents, 50 and 30 amp units. Concrete pads are level; sites are spotless and cell service allows for streaming. This is a do again. FYI: an annual $70 Texas park pass allows for unlimited visits to any park in the lone star state.
