Confirmed by 1 users | Last reported on August 15, 2023We spent Memorial Day weekend at a new Ohio State Park Campground near Portsmouth on the Ohio River. This was their opening weekend.
Shawnee State Park Ohio River Campground used to be a golf course and is now a campground where every site has full hookups. There are several ponds with fountains in them, and I am pretty sure the ponds are stocked with fish (we saw multiple people fishing). There are mature trees scattered around the campground, but most sites don’t have trees on them- use Google maps satellite view to see which sites have them, if that’s important to you.
Amenities include a splash pad, a playground, shower house, the nicest dog park I’ve ever seen, marina access, an archery range, walking trails, and a paddle loop for paddle boarders. The camp store was staffed with friendly, helpful employees and had ice cream and a variety of typical camping supplies.
Rates are currently $60 per night. Sites are level and blacktopped with concrete pads for the utilities and picnic tables. Sites are large and well spaced out.
We had 3/4 bars of LTE service with Verizon, and clear view of the skies for Starlink.
I think this is my favorite state park campground, we’ve booked Labor Day weekend already.

This is a great new portion of Shawnee State Park that contains all full hookup sites. Most sites are very spacious and flat with blacktop pads - many can support long rigs! 50/30/20amp with sewer and water. Water pressure was very good. Lots of walking paths and many other amenities like disc golf, pump track, splash pad, and kayak/SUP loop. Great T-Mobile cell service as well! My new favorite Ohio state park! If there are any knocks against this park, I'd say that there aren't as many trees as other parks and the sites aren't very private...but most are spread apart far enough from each other that it doesn't matter much.

Let me first say that I truly loved the golf course that this new campground sits on. RIP Shawnee SP⛳
We only stopped for an overnighter on our way home from eastern Tennessee, so we nabbed a pull through (80 sites, probably 20+ pull thrus). The design here is really good, some real spacious sites. Not a lot of shade however, it was a golf course. I think I found my lost ball from 2002 lol. I think we will come back and stay longer in warmer weather ( we stayed on Halloween).
Nice area of Ohio. Portsmouth is nearby for supplies. Plenty of hiking & scenery. Splash pad for the kids. Not sure if you get pool privileges at the lodge ( 6 miles away) in season.
We got half price with our Golden Buckeye card, awesome discounts Sunday through Thursdays in all Ohio SPs.
