“end of the trail of tears”
The town of Skullyville was an ending point of the Trail of Tears during the Indian removals of the 1830’s. The town derived its name from the Choctaw word for money, “iskuli”, literally calling itself “Moneytown”. It earned this title for dispersing the annuities given to those settling in Arkansas Country. The town grew with trading and farming and became a center of Choctaw culture and political life as well as the capital of one of the three original districts of the Choctaw Nation. Skullyville Cemetery is now all that is left of this once bustling region. Come learn about the history of Skullyville and view graves dated back into the 1800’s.
