“originally intended to house women & orphans”

This place is on private property. Listing for informational purposes only. Please do not visit without express permission from the land owner. The Woodmen's Circle Home sits on a 15 acre piece of land at the intersection of Highway 56 & FM 1417 in Sherman, Texas. Originally opened in 1930 as a home for widows and orphans, the property has gone through a string of owners and a handful of disasters, leading it to its present dilapidated state. Some say these buildings are haunted---and some just shake their heads at the waste of letting a once beautiful property fall into ruins. "The building is dilapidated to the extreme today, yet retains somehow it's original granduer. Upon approaching the abandoned manor you catch yourself looking into the rows of boarded windows, peering through the cracks into the shadows behind. From within the manor you can hear the occasional BANG! of some unhinged door slapping in the wind. The entire west wing of the home consists entirely of bedrooms...rows and rows of identical single room dorms with a shared bathroom for every pair. Some of the rooms still had children's wallpaper, with old looking rabbits and goats from an long ago era."

This has been demolished. It’s just an empty plot of land now.

Swung by at night on our road trip. Couldn’t access even up to gates due to construction, but took a quick walk at apartments nearby to spot the building from the side. Very cool, creepy building.. especially during a full moon. Would love to return in the day time!

Incredible. Easy access , and parking onsite. Someone maintains the grass and the county allows people to explore the structure. Gorgeous. Graffiti was trashy and unique. Got some amazing pics. Would definitely return. You could totally host a rave here.

I live in Sherman TX, and trust me there is nothing to see. It's on private property, and you won't be able to access it from any direction. There is "No Trespassing" signs posted everywhere.
Not worth the trip to see.

I was allowed to take photographs of the property this weekend (Sunday, September 20, 2015). I have posted the pictures (nearly 200) on my website at the following links:

Enjoy!

P.S. Do NOT trespass on the property. The owner has trespassers prosecuted and there is a $1,500 fine per person if you are caught on the property without permission. On top of that, the property is in EXTREMELY-BAD shape and it is EXTREMELY dangerous.

The architecture is still gorgeous, even if the structure is only a shell if its former self. I'm particularly fond of the beautiful bay windows, some of which extend two stories or more. Sadly, as time wears on, the location steadily worsens and is probably beyond rehabilitation at this point, even if someone wanted to do so. The flooring is unstable at best, very dangerous at worst. You can actually feel the bowing of the wood underneath your feet in some places. Nature and gravity have had an even worse impact on the roof. The official description here speaks of rooms. Many, if not most, especially on higher floors, have not withstood these tests of time. I have not seen the entire structure, and honestly, I'm not certain that all of the sections are accessible (or really worth the extra effort). The main and center edifice is by far the most memorable. There is still a structure standing in the back of the property, dwarfed in size by its parent building, but I find myself drawn to that one as well. When photographing, I sometimes even prefer the symmetrical features of the smaller annex.
So here's my CAVEAT(S):
1. This property is watched very closely by local authorities and citizens alike. The Sherman police will not tolerate trespassers, and if caught, arrest is a high possibility. Probably higher than would be considered normal.
2. I cannot emphasize enough how unsound the structure is as of early 2015. The dilapidation is extreme, and I even know someone that fell through the floor due to these structural compromises. I highly recommend only viewing from a distance, but if you insist on attempting to see the inside and are willing to accept the associated risks, DO NOT GO ALONE! If anything happens, you don't want to be there without anyone to assist you! But really, just don't risk it.
