Confirmed by 3 users | Last reported on April 20, 2024Do your research before deciding on Shelter Cove. Their website says the only road in is a 23 mile, curvy, mountain roady. May not be suitable/enjoyable for some RV's/Travel Trailers. I'm not sure about the road but we decided not to go after reading the description of the road on their website.
The drive: To get here is slow and curvy and takes you up and back down a mountain. The view from the top is spectacular but the drive down the coast side of the mountain is tough on your brakes, like you can smell your brakes when you park. It could be tough for bigger rigs but definitely doable if you really wanted to visit. Tractor trailers have to bring supplies so there’s definitely no curve to sharp that an RV couldn’t make it around.
Shelter Cove: All the driving is worth it. It is a beautiful beach that will reward you with quiet isolation and natural beauty. Something about mountains meeting ocean has always been spectacular to me because it’s like two drastic elements converging. The sunsets are incredible, the beaches are clean, and while I didn’t stay overnight I’m sure the stargazing is spectacular.
Setting here is beautiful with large grassy/gravel area, some hookups and large no hookup area. Facility is grim however. Very old feel and not kept up well. Showers did not drain and bath facilities were very run down. There was a nice little Funky Deli which had some pretty decent food. Manager was as run down as the facility and nasty. Upscale restaurant across the Runway with a B&B. The. Whole place just seemed wore out. If you go not expecting anything in the way of services. You should be ok. NOTE: the road to this place is an accident waiting to happen. Very STEEP very long downhill coming in here. Shift down keep your speed way down and don't try this road unless you have very good brakes!!!!

We loved this park. That said it’s a challenge to get here. Don’t underestimate the drive here. The park is located about 20 miles off of US 101, and includes several very steep downhills. To preserve your breaks you need to be very comfortable safely towing or driving your rig down hill. You will then arrive at an older park, at the south end of a small airstrip that is steps away from the Pacific Coast. Across the way is where many of the sport fishing boats are kept. Don’t let any of that put you off because it is all a part of the history here.
The sites are all on grass and will require some leveling. Also our electric was a shared pedestal and on the curb side. All very suitable and in good condition. There is a good mix of hookup and dry camping sites. Located on site is the Deli and a small convince store. We didn’t use the bathrooms, and the laundry was serviceable but a bit dated. There is a large patio, and enclosed area just off the store that looks to be used as a music venue. The staff were excellent and helpful.
I wouldn’t plan on using this place to explore the Coastal Redwoods. The drive is too much. Choose Eureka or Crescent City. However you are in the perfect place to enjoy the Lost Coast. There are short drives to beaches, and longer and rougher drives to explore the remote areas. There are several nature trails nearby, and a small golf course to enjoy.
You will find several local food establishments here, and if needed a General Store and Market several miles away. Try Mi Mochima the Venezuelan food place at the other end of the runway.
Speaking fo the runway. The small airstrip here is quite active and services general aviation, private aircraft. While there is some noise it isn’t bad and only during daylight.
Cell service wasn’t great, and our booster helped. We could get voice calls (at times spotty) and some data for emails and the like but don’t plan on streaming anything. WiFi is available for purchase by the gig and was strong and reliable and allowed for streaming.
Access gets 3 stars due to the road into Shelter Cove. Noise gets a 4 because of the airplanes, but the best thing about this place is that you will hear the ocean from your campsite.

I recently had the pleasure of staying here and it exceeded all my expectations. From the breathtaking views to the delicious food and the incredibly helpful and friendly staff, every aspect of my experience was 10/10.
First and foremost, the location is simply unbeatable. Situated right by the ocean, I was treated to views of the ocean right from our rv. Waking up to the sound of crashing waves and being able to step outside my RV to feel the ocean breeze was amazing.
The sites were well-maintained and spacious, allowing for a comfortable and enjoyable stay. The park also offered clean restroom facilities, a little store and a restaurant.
The best part, however, is the staff. From the moment I arrived, I was greeted with warm smiles and genuine hospitality. Whether it was recommendations on what to see, or simply a friendly chat, they were always there to help. Their dedication and friendliness truly made me feel like a valued guest.
In conclusion, I cannot recommend this park enough. The incredible views, delicious food, and helpful and friendly staff make it a truly unforgettable experience.
Oh and there was a beach right there we could walk down and see seals!

This is the type of place that one you stop you want to buy property at. It’s at the end of a 20 mile road off the 101. The 20 miles will take you almost an hour. Our rig was 24 feet long and we were going slow. It’s windy and beautiful. If you have a bigger rig, I would suggest that you give yourself more time, there are some pretty sharp turns.
Once you get here, you will be greeted with views and every direction of the coastline. This is also the black sands Beach coastline. There is a 25 mile hike that finishes up here that goes all along the beach. You can find information about it on YouTube. However, once you get here, there is a marina, several restaurants, a brewery, There is even a landing strip for a small planes. But the RV park itself is clean, grassy, plenty of room, dog, friendly. There is a laundry room, showers, bathrooms, there is a great deli with breakfast, lunch and dinner, all reasonably priced. Everything that we had in any of the restaurants was excellent.
There are sea lions down at the coastline. We came for two nights and decided to stay longer. At the time of this review, it was $50 a night.
