“Full of Great Amenities!”
Black Canyon campgroud is one of the more popular campgrounds on the Santa Fe National Forest and offers the most ameneties of any of the campgrounds in the Espanola Ranger Disrict. There are 36 units for cars and RVs, 6 walk-in units for tent camping only, Picnic tables and grills, Drinking Water, a Campground host on site, Vaulted toilets, and several Double sites to accommodate a maximum of 16 people. There is a very nice hiking trail that leaves the back of the campground and makes a loop of about a mile, returning to the campground. If not staying in the campground, those using the trail should park outside the main gate and walk in. Trailhead parking is available in the lot near the campground entrance. There is no electricity available, and no RV dumpstation on site. A dumpstation is available nearby for a nominal fee right next door at Hyde Memorial State Park, a part of the NM State Park system. There are additional recreation opportunities along NM 475, both above and below Black Canyon Campground, including hiking and biking trails, picnic areas, and in the winter, both nordic and alpine skiing.
Stayed here for one night and loved the peacefulness of the campground. The paved road is steep but each camping spot had a nice area to park the camper, put up a tent if desired, and use a fire ring and picnic table. Our spot #14 had a cute stone wall around it as well and was a short walk up to the end of the campground to the 1 1/2 to 2 mi trail head loop. For a family from Houston, the altitude was surprising and made the hike challenging despite the relatively short distance. Really enjoyed staying here, especially since it was so close to Santa Fe. Did not have electrical or water, but planned for this and filled up / dumped at the state park located immediately to the right as you pull out of the campground. Weather was a dream in mid June.
By the way, the picture of the red rock and tent is not accurate.
A really beautiful place to camp, very quiet also. It was pretty chilly!!!
Wonderful forest to wake up to in the morning. You're 8,000 ft up so be wary of very chilly mornings. Drinking water is available. We stayed near a stream and it was like a lullaby to fall to sleep to.
