“Come see thousands of seals”
The Northern Elephant Seal, Mirounga angustirostris, is an extraordinary marine mammal. It spends eight to ten months of the year in the open ocean, diving 1000 to 5000 feet deep for periods of fifteen minutes to two hours. They also migrate thousands of miles, twice a year, to their land based rookery for birthing, breeding, molting and rest. The Piedras Blancas rookery on Highway 1, seven miles north of San Simeon, is home to 17,000 animals. Cost: Free

So glad we stopped! A fun (but smelly) stop on our way up the coast. We went in the summer and there was plenty to see.
A truly stunning display of nature. My buddies from Canada and Israel were stunned that there were animals in the world that looked like this! Any person of any age and any level of sophistication will revert back to the age of 5, and be thoroughly fascinated and entertained by the elephant seals. When I came back to San Simeon with my girlfriend in January, the beach was much more packed then in the summer, and full of baby seals!
An incredible sight everyone should try to take in at least once. The winter months, around Jan. and Feb. are the best months to see the pups.
Amazing sight. Guides told us that January is the most exciting month to visit as pups are being born & bulls are fighting for mating rights.
This was a great experience! There was a volunteer out there providing up with information about the Elephant Seals. They even have their own webcam. I would highly recommend visiting the Seals.
Awesome place to see the seals in their natural habitat. I passed by in March and they were all sleeping and farting? Lol
So amazing!!! I´ve never seen so many of this beautiful animals in their natural habitat! We were there in January, and we´ve seen so many cute newborn pups. It´s so great!
Wonderful place to see these ocean based mammals. Learnt lots from the docents.
Amazing, defiantly stop. We were there in Jan and got to see lots of pups and moms along with bulls fighting. I will always stop but if you are there in Jan or Feb stop!
