Confirmed by 12 users | Last reported on April 05, 2024This is a perfect place for an overnight if you're traveling through the area. We pulled up on Friday of Memorial Day weekend and there's no one here. There is room for 8+ rigs. There's a welcome sign that says "Free Overnight Parking". There aren't specific campsites, just covered picnic tables and 2 nice big flat gravel lanes. We have 2 little people under 5 years old so we picked a place near the playground/baseball diamond/community center.
The bathrooms are decent. No showers, but there's porcelain in both the men's and women's.
Easy walking distance to the gas station / convenience store. Heads up, they don't sell beer or any alcohol of any kind. The closest store for that is the next town over.
We have 5 bars on the iphone and 5 bars LTE on our puck (Verizon).
When you're reading this in the future, there are signs here proposing a "No" vote to block the proposed nuclear dump site. Let's hope that doesn't happen but... it's at least a good conversation starter with the locals.
Couldn't ask for a better free spot. We'd stay here again if we were passing through.

I didn’t stay long enough to explore the town but the folks in nearby gas station/convenience store were nice and friendly.
Very convenient to the highway, gas and store. A big welcome, free sign greets with eight first come first serve spots each with picnic table. There is a cute little playground on one end of the park and a bathroom in the center of the U shaped drive.
The sites were well lit and the park felt safe and welcoming. Would definitely stay here again.

Stayed here again in early July. It is now my go to as I cross NM from Texas to California and back. It's easy, clean and free.

This is a great little overnight spot. There are no hookups but the parking areas are pretty level. There were two other people here the night that we stayed. There are no designated parking areas but it's pretty easy to find a place that works. Scattered about are covered picnic tables and some grills. It's mostly gravel but there are some areas that are dirt / grass. We had no trouble getting in with our 31' rig towing a Jeep. There are some restrooms here but they were closed for the season while we were here.
You'll hear a little road noise (some rumble strips off of Route 66 right next to the park) but nothing bad. T-Mobile had 5 bars of LTE with no booster. AT&T had 2 to 5 bars of LTE with no booster - it fluctuated constantly so I have no idea what that's about.. it worked though.
Overall, you can't beat the price and it's easy in and out. Watch out for the gopher holes and there are a few stickers in the grass, so keep an eye on the paws.

San Jon Municipal Park is a very easy on/off Interstate 40 and perfect for a quiet overnight. We arrived late afternoon the 1st of April and found the park completely empty. Soon after, another small RV joined us and then a third larger diesel pusher. There was plenty of room for all. As other reviewers have noted watch out for the large dip at the entrance and if you are exiting the park to the south there is no culvert in the drive and its a very deep dip. You can see where many others have scraped going out. All in all this is a gem located right off I-40 and we will definitely stop again when heading across New Mexico.

Easy access off of I-40. We didn't use the bathrooms but there are flush toilets, cold running water & they were clean. As mentioned in earlier reviews, the South exit had quite a dip where others have scraped bottom, so best to avoid that exit. We were the only campers so lots of privacy. A little freeway noise. No hook ups but there are covered picnic tables & BBQ grills. Bare bone basics but a great spot to spend the night for free!

Although I did not stay overnight here I gladly would if the timing was better. Stopped by here on my way west. Unfortunately at 6pm it was still 90 degrees (Mid June) and many hours until it cooled off. There was 1 RV in the park. I walked around, checked the restrooms etc., a fine place to stay at the right time of year. Not far at all from the freeway.

I parked in the spot next to the bathrooms, which were clean and offered fresh water. The place was super-quiet. After 8 PM, even the local traffic died off. I camped in the back of a Ford Windstar, and I was glad I brought cardboard to black out the windows. The park has about six guard lights, and they light up the place like a Yankee's night game. Still, very peaceful, and I would camp there again.

This was a nice little city park. We stayed overnight on 10-02-2018 and it was still rather hot. We found a spot under a shade tree and it cooled down rather quickly as the sun went down. There was easily room for 8-10 campers. The park was well maintained and clean along with clean restrooms and nice picnic shelters. As mentioned by others, there are no hook-ups but this is a great place to dry camp. It is much, much better than a Wally World parking lot, truck stop, or roadside rest area!
Several mentioned a very uneven drive entrance/exit. We have a 32 ft 5-er and did not have any problems with the drives. The other thing to consider is that the only supplies/food is available only at a truck stop/gas station convenience store. The C-store closes at 9 PM and reopens at 6 AM. It is only 150 yards from the park and easily walk-able.
San Jon is a little community of only 700 people. The park was far enough from I-40 that the traffic noise was not an issue. There was local large truck traffic on the highway going past the park but that abated before dark. I wish there were more small towns that offered these parks for dry camping. It definitely felt very safe.

Nice spot to stay overnight. Far enough off the freeway so it was quiet. Good cell signal; 50/28 with AT&T.
