“this is where they make fortune cookies!”
As you walk down Ross Alley, you may just pass this fortune cookie factory, but the aroma of the freshly made fortune cookies will draw you in. This factory has been supplying fortune cookies to Chinatown and around the world since 1962. Within a few paces of the entrance you can see fortune cookies being made right in front of you. First, the thin circular cookie is pulled off a hot press. Then, a fortune is placed on one side of the hot, flat dough. Next, each soft, hot cookie is shaped over a steel rod into the shape of a fortune cookie. This process must be done very quickly, otherwise the cookie will harden before it has the right fortune cookie shape. When you are inside the factory, you will be amazed at how quickly the fortune cookies are made. Come experience the fortune cookie factory and taste freshly made fortune cookies.
My body is well over 50% flat fortune cookie at this point. If you take only one thing from my review, take this: stay away from this place if you value your waistline. Sure, the tiny factory is super interesting. And sure, you don't *need* to buy the bags of flat fortune cookies. But you will. Of course you will. Then you'll start eating them and think "I'll just have one." You will be wrong. Oh so wrong. Break out the sweatpants now.
Well I went here today, was down a cool little Chinatown side alley sorta Big Trouble in Little China style. The place is tiny, won't take you very long to experience it, but it is kinda neat for a 5 min thing. They give you flat fortune cookies to munch on while you are in there and of course you can buy a bunch more. They charge you $0.50 to take photos which is kinda crappy but the place itself is free. Flat fortune cookies for some reason taste way better than the folded up normal ones, been munching on em since I left. I'm sure they are like 90% sugar though
OMG, this place is awesome!!! Yes it is small. Yes it is down an alley. Yes they charge you to take a photo. It is all still AWESOME! The flat fortune cookies were warm and yummy. For $1.00 you can write your own fortune and they fold it into a cookie right there for you. They even give you a small take out box to put it in. If you are doing more than one, make sure you keep track of which cookie goes in which box. The people were so friendly and showed me all kinds of stuff around the shop. You can buy chocolate fortune cookies, chocolate dipped cookies and x-rated cookies. Well worth the trip down the alley. Make sure you pay attention to the metal tiles on the ground, they are just as cool.
Tiny operation, very cool to see. Grab some crazy flavored fortune cookies or a bag of fortuneless flats.... more bang for your buck! I personally like the fortunes in my cookies. Also they make "x-rated" fortune cookies which is a fantastic souvenir
It was pretty neat. We were there about 5 minutes. for .50 cents you can put your own fortune in a cookie. you can buy bags of fortune cookies, or bags of the flat cookies that didn't get fortunes. it's .50 to take a picture, but seeing the place itself is free. It's located in a little alley in Chinatown, so it was a bit hard to find. It's definitely a neat experience though. I would recommend it.
