“Enjoy the melting pot of cultures”
Amawele's is a Zulu/Ubantu word which means "The Twins". Growing up as identical twins in our beautiful country South Africa, people had a difficult time telling us apart, so they made it easier on themselves, and just called us "Amawele", or "The Twins". Amawele's South African Kitchen's cuisine can be described as a melting pot of English, Indian,Dutch, Malaysian and Native African cookery. The cuisine of South Africa is sometimes called "Rainbow Cuisine", as it has had a variety of multicultural sources, and stages. The cuisine can be generalized as Cookery practised by the indigenous people of South Africa such as the Khoisan and Xhosa, Zulu, Sotho speaking people and Settler cookery that emerged from several waves of immigration introduced during the colonial period by people of Indian, Afrikaner and British descent and servants. This included the cuisine of the Cape Malay people, which has many characteristics of Malaysia and Java, and recipes from neighboring colonial cultures such as Portuguese Mozambique.
