“connecting people with wildlife!”
The San Francisco Zoo is accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums and represents a uniquely successful partnership between the City of San Francisco and the San Francisco Zoological Society. We designed the Zoo with the underlying belief that interaction and activity lead to conservation action. We hope that caring for specific animals will inspire people to care for all wildlife and that this is the first step in the journey to becoming a conservationist. Despite the many reasons that draw people here, we know that once they arrive at the Zoo, they will inevitably fall in love with wildlife, and that upon their departure from the Zoo they will begin their journey to become conservationists. We hope that you too will join us on this journey.

Amazing zoo! Lots of animal interaction and fun activities. We got to see the animals up close. The giraffes are a must-see. They are beautiful. My favorite activities are the feeding of the animals. We were lucky on our day of visit because we were able to feed the goats, penguins, and tigers. We also took a ride at the steam train and it was fun. The zoo is close to the ocean, so make sure to bring your jacket because it was brisk, foggy, and cold. The staff were nice and friendly.
I am not sure if I enjoyed the animals or the landscaping more! This is a beautiful zoo in a beautiful area of San Franscisco. I am just very partial to the coast side of the City since it is so different from the crazy metropolitan side, so the location alone was a plus. The only downfall is how crowded it can get here, so keep in mind the days you visit - I recommend during the work week (with potential field trips). Plan on spending most of the day here to pace yourself and enjoy all the zoo has to offer. One of the coolest attractions for me were the free-roaming bald eagles (they are unable to fly and are therefore not caged) - that was amazing! Lastly, wear layers or bring a coat if you are not used to cool, coastal weather. No matter how warm and sunny it is in downtown SF, it will be foggy, damp, and cool at the zoo.
