“Texas's first museum of modern art”
The McNay Art Museum, founded in 1950 in San Antonio, is the first modern art museum in the State of Texas. The museum was created by Marion Koogler McNay's original bequest of most of her fortune, her important art collection and her 24-room Spanish Colonial Revival-style mansion that sits on 23 acre that are landscaped with fountains, broad lawns and a Japanese-inspired garden and fishpond.
Every second Thursday of the month (6-9pm) you can catch some free live music outdoors and eat from awesome local food trucks!
This museum is outstanding. The house is beautiful. Every room is different with tiles, painted woodwork and iron work. The library is amazing. The artwork is impressive. Sculptures inside and out, paintings, icons, and more. My husband and I spent 3 hours here, and we would have stayed longer if we could. This is one of the few museums my husband said he’d go back to. If you have time for only one museum in San Antonio, it should be the McNay.
If you are looking to visit any museums in San Antonio, the McNay should be first on your list. This is by far the most beautiful museum in SA Town. The collection as well as the grounds are impressive. Every twist and turn of the mansion is decorated with beautiful hand painted tiles, elaborately carved wood work, painted ceilings, and landscaped gardens. The museum also boasts a large collection of outdoor sculptures throughout the property. It is a photographers dream. Parking is free, free admission every Thursday after 4pm , and complimentary wheelchairs are available upon request.
