Now, because there's not as much to do here, the campground is very easy to get into last minute, even over a weekend. And it remains fairly chill and quiet.. just our style.
The sites are very large and spacious, easy to feel privacy here. Many sites have wide expansive prairie views (formerly lake views) with gorgeous Texas sunsets. And because the sites were made for parking a boat at, they're all huge and can easily accommodate rigs of any size.
We stayed at the southern Red Arroya campground, and loved it. It's just a couple miles from the town of San Angelo which has ample shopping, dining and amenities. But yet the parks feels 'out there'.
Excellent cellular signal on both AT&T and Verizon. A gem of a find if you're looking for somewhere quiet and have space around you.

We enjoyed this campground as a base to see San Angelo and to kick off our 2 month tour of Texas. The negatives were no grass for my dog, showers were small, lots of stickers and some skunks. Positives were site was spacious, Park was quiet and is near San Angelo. The historic part of San Angelo was neat. The lake is low but offered bird watching.

The spaces are mostly flat and all have a fire pit and concrete picnic table under a canopy. Unfortunately The lake is almost gone so no fishing to speak of. Due to a multi-year lack of rain the entire area is suffering and the trees are mostly gone. The campsite does have WiFi so that is a plus.

Just stayed here overnight on way to west Texas, but really enjoyed the area. Camped in the South Side camping area, water and electric only, with covered picnic table. Flat area up on a ridge, which turned out to be a good choice a we experienced flooding rains that prevented us from leaving the park in the evening. Liked the "metal bison herd" next to the campground. Would like to return and spend more time in the area.

This was a stopover on the way to San Antonio. Overall it was perfectly fine for the one night, but it is not a location we would seek out to stay again. There are not many trails to walk around the park. The area with hook ups does not necessarily have water views from the site. Each site is very spacious, but it’s wide open flat ground. Each camper can see one another. The town of San Angelo is cute. Unfortunately it was extremely cold and drizzly when we were there. However in warmer sunnier weather, definitely a work in a stroll through the town while you are there. Tip: do not necessarily follow your GPS. Ours sent us to the headquarters/offices. The camping area is around the way about 15 to 20 more minutes. We should have followed the signage from the highway! Lol! Also if you are in a small rig or tent camping, the no hook up area is way more beautiful! You are right on the water! Although I think we only saw maybe one site that would hold our 33 foot trailer! Most spots were equipped for a class C or B.

We lucked into a campsite here for one night. The campsites are the most dispersed we have encountered in a park for quite some time. Our site was pretty level and had 50 amp electric and water. Covered concrete picnic table, fire ring and grill. Lots of pretty wildflowers in the grass. Very open area with few trees, a lake and it was quiet and peaceful. The staff was very friendly and helpful. We recommend this park.

The spacing between the sites was great. The breeze by the lake is nice. The location feels remote but it’s convenient to things.
No sewer connection, no tall trees, a lot of bugs for the time of year. With no tall trees the limited walking trails are not that enjoyable. Would be better to explore this place with a bike.
One dump station on the way out. It’s dirty. You will likely wait in line on the way out unless you go somewhere else.
I’m torn about this place. It has potential. The sites are spaced well and that’s appealing. Add sewer connections and I’d probably come back for a longer stay.

We stayed here for 4 nights in early May 2019. We stayed in the Red Arroyo Campground at the South entrance of the park. The best thing about this park is the amount of space between spots. Plenty of space between you and your neighbors. The park is beautiful and very quiet. When we were there the wildflowers were in full bloom. Spots are water and electric only, but there is a dump onsite. We had spot #13 and it was steep, but we were able to tuck our 30ft trailer at the bottom where it leveled out. No levelers required. The park has many trails for hiking and biking. Some of the trails were a bit muddy, but they had recently had rain. Cell phone service was good. We were able to get internet through the hotspot. Overall, it was a nice stay and we would stay here again. $20 price reflects camping fee only. Day use fee is $4 per person if you do not have a Texas State Park Pass.

So far, so good. Wide open, not much shade but beautiful in its own way. The sites are huge and not close to each other. San Angelo is a decent sized city, only a few miles from the park.

Nice campground that is well maintained and located on the edge of San Angelo.
Sites a well spaced, with most providing excellent views of the surrounding area.
More than 50 miles of easy and moderate well marked trails for hiking and mountain biking.
State Park has a herd of Bison and Long Horns. Saw lots of wildlife, including: deer, coyote, rabbits, white pelicans and other birds.
