“a mile west of Lake Isabel”
Nestled among aspen and tall Douglas fir trees, St. Charles Campground is in a quiet part of the Lake Isabel Recreation Area. Located on the banks of St. Charles Creek, the campground is popular with campers who enjoy the sounds of water tumbling through the shaded boulders. The campground sits a mile west of Lake Isabel in the Wet Mountains, a beautiful range in the San Isabel National Forest. At an elevation of 8,600 feet, Lake Isabel was designed and constructed in the 1930s as a recreational haven from the dusty plains far below. Rugged mountain peaks in the area provide water for the abundant wildlife and fish populations.

We got lucky. Just east of Bishop’s Castle in the San Isabel NF is this wonderful recreation area The FS was about two weeks from locking the gates for the season. We on a whim drove in past the lake on the nice “paved” roads to the only campground still open All signage had been removed. Spoke to some campers and told that there was no fee for the next weeks though the water was off and the host was leaving Had a very quite night and enjoyed fantastic fall colors

We'd definitely stay here again. It's a beautiful campground with an attentive host. We caught fish in the stream. Makes for a lovely quick weekend getaway.
