“set along the Frontier Pathways”
a Vista Campground is situated in a meadow overlooking the west side of the 40-acre Lake Isabel. It is set along the Frontier Pathways and Historic Byway in the Wet Mountains along one of the Colorado Birding Trails. Lake Isabel is one of the few lakes in Colorado developed purely for recreation purposes. Built by the Civilian Conservation Corps, the lake attracts many campers who come to hike, canoe, fish and spend time bird watching. St. Charles Creek flows near the campground and offers additional fishing opportunities.

The closest dump was at a KOA camp site about 16 miles away in Colorado City. No showers at La Vista but they did have vault toilets. Campsites were close together. It seems a popular spot for all of the locals to camp due to the fishing. Everybody was very friendly however. Me and another person shared the same camp site so, splitting the cost, I was only paying $7 per night.

Camp hosts were knowledgeable and helpful. Vault toilets were spotless and cleaned multiple times a day. Electricity is advertised as 15 amp but the two sites (22 and 18) we stayed in had 30 amp service. Water available from spigots. NO ATT cell service. We had to drive 5+ miles back towards Colo City to get service. Great views of the lake. The hosts said bears were in the area but we never saw signs of them. Lake is stocked twice a year and the locals turn out on the weekend to fish. Lots of picnic spots in the park and a lovely small stream that feeds the lake is a short walk from the campground. Bishop’s Castle (google it) is a few miles down the road and is free to visit. This is a high elevation park so drink plenty of water and give your body time to acclimate.

This is one of those places you’ve been looking for
Camp sites are spaced out well for the most part. Most are fairly level - ours had a hill to get into it but flattish on the top…just had to pickup one side a few inches.
It says 15amp but I’m fairly sure they all are 30Amp as that’s what I saw when I looked at a few sites.
There is a nice walk way down to the lake. The path with stairs is closer to the 8-10 camp site parking area. There are many other ways to get there but require driving to another area. There is an accessible paths to get all the way there as well as an accessible fishing area. This was awesome for my son.
Generally speaking the days are not too hot and cool off at night. Host has firewood for sale if needed.
There are several pit toilets and kept clean too. Generally there is a water source by them too.
