“The parking garage that brought down an administration”

The parking garage where the shadowy "Deep Throat" leaked information in the Watergate scandal, of the most iconic locations in conspiracy history, is scheduled to be torn down to make room for a residential building.  After a unanimous vote by the Arlington County Board on Saturday, developer Monday Properties thas received the go-ahead to demolish the office building, and famous parking garage, where the mysterious figure known as "Deep Throat" fueled the Watergate scandal that resulted in the resignation of President Richard Nixon. Washington Post reporter Bob Woodward would recieve a signal to meet "Deep Throat" via a flowerpot with a red flag placed on the balcony of the secret source's apartment, after which the two would rendevous in the famous garage. Over a year's time, the two met in the garage six times, during which "Deep Throat" would relay information about the White House's obstruction of an FBI  probe into a the Watergate office complex break-ins. In 2005, "Deep Throat" was finally revealed to be former associate director of the FBI William Mark Felt Sr.. Now, it looks like the infamous meeting spot is going to be turned into a grocery store and apartment complex. Bummer. "We knew well the significance of what took place there," board member J. Walter Tejada told reporters on Sunday. "The developer has been very responsive and worked well with the community." The board's vice chairwoman, Mary Hynes, said: "The Rosslyn of the '70s allowed street-level garage walls and was, in fact, not a very nice place for people. So we will mark the historic nature of the site while creating a fabulous new plaza where people will gather." Monday Properties aims to start construction in early 2017 and promised to keep a historical marker on site.  If you want to see this piece of conspiracy history, you better grab your trenchcoat and head to Rosslyn, Virginia before it crumbles much like the administration that made it famous.
