“Camping at Red Feather Lakes”
Campground is open during the following season(s): May - September (Peak Season) September 02 - September (Walk-Up) During the above season(s), individual campsites are released on a 6-month rolling basis. West Lake Campground is located 48 miles northwest of Fort Collins, in north central Colorado, near the village of Red Feather Lakes. Visitors enjoy the area for its canoeing, fishing and trail opportunities. The campground offers 31 accessible single- and double-family campsites, with electric hookups. Five additional sites are designated for tent camping only and do not have hookups. Each site contains a tent pad, picnic table and campfire ring with grill. Vault toilets and drinking water are provided. Firewood may be gathered in the forest or purchased from the campground host. The campground is situated in a ponderosa pine forest, on the shore of West Lake, at an elevation of 8,200 feet. Afternoon thunderstorms can be expected during spring and summer months. Due to the mountain pine beetle infestation and removal of hazardous trees, some sites have reduced shade. Canoeing and fishing are popular activities on the 25-acre, no-wake West Lake. Anglers cast for rainbow and lake trout. Several additional lakes are in the vicinity. Many hiking, biking and horseback riding trails are in the surrounding area, including the 1.5-mile West Lake Trail and 4-mile Mount Margaret Trail. Several off-road vehicle trails are located within five miles of the campground. Other popular activities include viewing wildlife and visiting nearby Redfeather Visitor Center.

Confirmed by 3 users | Last reported on July 27, 2023Knowing how packed in some of the sites are up the poudre canyon, e.g. kelly flats, I was worried that this camp site would be basically a parking lot in the woods, next to a lake. I was pleasantly surprised at how spaced apart the sites are - easily 20-30 yards apart, some even more so.
Trout fishing on the lake is absolutely why the vast majority of people come to this site. The west end of the site is near the day access parking, and as a result there are more people, and less privacy.
The east end of the loop is where you want to be to get a little more removed from others. The north side of the loop also affords you a view of the lake. The proximity to the lake is not significantly different on north vs. south, just the difference in view.
The site was very quiet. People come here to fish and relax - no party animals or blasting music here.
TMO cell coverage varied based on your location around the lake, but I had 3 bars of 4g (not LTE) at our site.

I would chose West Lake Campground over the other campgrounds around Red Feather Lakes. At West Lake you have easy road access and a grocery store about a mile away. The sites are clean, orderly, the camp hosts are helpful and friendly. Noise is low. The area is rather sheltered from the west wind which typically blows all afternoon in the summer. It is just a chilled area. We have camped here two times in the last three years.

Well spaced, quiet when I have been here (2nd time). It has first come first serve sites which is great these days if you can leave mid week. Rather than trying to get reservations these days!
Nice clean sites ranging in size, helpful camp hosts and a nice hike down Mt. Margaret can be found if you follow from the north of the lake, down to Lake Dowdy and around to the north of that lake.

Light rains, some rolling thunder & lightning on occasion.
Beautiful view of July 4th fireworks (on July 3)
New wildflower blossoms every morning.
Friendly Neighbors a long way away, & gracious camp hosts.

Every site was clean and convenient to restrooms, water and the lake with room and hook-up for our 24ft. RV and my bother's truck and tent! Each site was well-spaced so even when it's busy, you don't feel crowded. The managers were very helpful! When we had a friend unexpectedly able to join, they rearranged our site so we could be adjacent to an open one they could use. A few sites are set off of the lake, so definitely check the map to know what you are getting (avoid the 30's if you want to be right on the lake.)
There were signs posted 'no swimming' in the small lake, but the kids had a blast splashing and paddle boarding. The fish were well-stocked as well and the paths were well-maintained.
Spectacular sunsets and all around a wonderful time!

Our 3rd visit in 2 years.
Everything is clean & available. FCFS put us on the lake since our 2 night reservation wasn't open yet. There for 5 nights, then moved to "windy ridge" #36 for 2 nights as the reservation came in for lake side #26.
Made it before thunderstorms came. Hosts were so helpful. This is the last week of the season or we'd stay longer. Decided to put out outriggers out incase the high winds come up with the thunderstorms.

We snagged two fcfs sites about 10 am. Checkout time is 1pm, but early bird gets the site. 29-36 are fcfs always and are mostly up higher away from the lake. There’s a nice one mile path around the lake. The host did a good job keeping the pit toilets stocked and smelling good
