“commemorating the life of the founder of Rhode Island”
Roger Williams National Memorial commemorates the life of the founder of Rhode Island and a champion of the ideal of soul freedom. Williams was an outcast in England, Massachusetts, and Plymouth. Granted refuge by the First Peoples, he founded Providence in 1636. This colony served as a refuge where all could live according to their conscience, free from government interference.
