“celebrating books & booklovers alike”
The Alexander House Booklovers’ Bed & Breakfast is a literary-themed inn located in the quaint historic district of Princess Anne on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. The colorful Queen Anne Victorian features authors’ portraits, dramatic colors and whimsical literary details throughout. Each room offers a creative interpretation of a famous author’s own room in his or her time. Immerse yourself in the jazzy Harlem Renaissance of the Langston Hughes Room; or a 19th-century high seas adventure in the Robert Louis Stevenson Room. Relax with a book from our eclectic library in the Mark Twain Library and Parlor. Partake of a gourmet breakfast, afternoon tea or evening liqueur in the charmingly French Cafe Colette.
Bookworms will LOVE this place. Even the cafe and the parlor were themed after authors. Bonus: clawfoot tubs in the rooms and an outstanding breakfast.
Don't let the name Princess Anne fool you. It's been in the news for huge drug busts, a murder, and this B&B doesn't sit amidst idyllic Victorian homes. There are abandoned homes right around the corner and it felt so sketchy that I was uncomfortable leaving my car parked on the street. That's the only parking! The innkeeper greeted us by asking us to remove our shoes so she could show us around. The verandah is a small porch that needed a sweep. The free Wi-Fi does not work in the bedrooms so it's not much use. There is no TV and Princess Anne is not a place for a casual evening stroll. She whispered to my 18 year old niece to "watch out" for the other house guest. Apparently, he's a 48ish old man who likes to flirt. Ok, this was downright weird. We packed our stuff and left. I called the inn keeper to tell us why we left and she said it wasn't a good reason to give a refund. Really? You tell my 18 year old niece to watch out for your house guest and expect us to stay! She claimed she was just kidding. The area is blighted, street parking feels unsafe, the wifi doesn't work in the bedrooms and the whole experience put me on such high alert that I left. This place is not as described. There are no crepes for breakfast midweek, just a continental. Look elsewhere!
