“See where all Beverly Cleary's stories really happened!”
Grant Park features a baseball field, basketball court, playground, dog off-leash area, football field, fountain, paths, reservable picnic area, soccer field, softball field, tennis court, tennis court and track. The park is named after Ulysses S. Grant who visited Portland three times, a rare thing for a president to do in the days before air travel - or even before standardized rail travel! Grant was first assigned to Fort Vancouver where he made friends with many of Portland's politicians. The park is also home to the Beverly Cleary Sculpture Garden. Children’s author Beverly Cleary grew up in northeast Portland, and life-sized statues in the park commemorate three of her most memorable characters: Ramona Quimby, Henry Huggins and Henry’s dog, Ribsy. The park is mentioned several times in Cleary’s book, and the garden features a map of the neighborhood showing where events in the books “really happened.”
Reviews
It’s a great park with three small sculptures. Good for the family and those that grew up reading the books!
We walked a mile from the max and it is only three sculptures and a fountain.m, there's not even a sign or plaque with information. It's a cute park, but not worth it if your can't drive to it
Good place for kids to stretch their legs; locals come to exercise-if you're a runner, you can run some laps. I loved the Beverly Cleary statues, of course; my son remarked that "their eyes were freaky!"
