“Get drunk in an old elementary school”
Remember when the worst thing you could imagine was being kept after class? My, how things have changed! At Kennedy School, you'll never want to leave. Here you can have a pint in a classroom, enjoy an aged whiskey and a cigar in detention, enjoy a movie in the old auditorium.... The possibilities here are endless. (Just don't run in the hallways, please. You might spill your beer.) Since its 1915 opening, this historic elementary school has been a beloved fixture of its Northeast Portland neighborhood. McMenamins renovated the once-abandoned scholastic gem and turned it into Portland's most unique hotel. Here you'll find 57 comfy guestrooms with private baths and telephones (some fashioned from former classrooms complete with original chalkboards and cloakrooms – others with an author's theme), a restaurant, multiple small bars, a movie theater, soaking pool, gift shop and a brewery (just wait until the principal hears about this!). Extensive original artwork and historical photographs cover the walls, ceilings, doorways and hallways. For neighborhood residents, out-of-town guests and business travelers, Kennedy School is a memorable and comfortable place to gather. The hotel is located minutes from Portland International Airport as well as to shopping in downtown Portland. Kennedy School allows pets in hotel rooms for a $15 fee. Pets may not be in any of the food or beverage areas.
So awesome! Stayed in one of the classrooms and loved everything about it. The windows open out to lush gardens and the decor of the entire place is out of the ordinary. It really is hard to describe. The staff was helpful AND friendly - really enjoyed our stay. Giving it a 4 though - We had dinner in the main restaurant, it was OK.
This is one of the coolest places I have ever stayed. Doing the passports is also awesome. Heated soaking pool, movie theater, 5 bars and restaurants, cigar lounge, and pool hall all wrapped up in an absolutely incredible historic environment. Highly recommend!
The Kennedy School achieves its objective with a cool/creepy vibe. Well chosen artwork. Just an overall awesome renovation job. Even if you don't stay at the hotel, you can enjoy the restaurants/bars inside or just walk around the halls for an hour and explore the building.
Watching a cheap movie while enjoying pizza and beer is a great way to unwind!
Pretty wild place. They took over a whole school and themed it with several offbeat bars, restaurants, event spaces, rooms, and much more. We just stopped by for a quick drink to check it out, and sadly cocktails and service weren't too hot, but the place itself was well worth checking out. Good on these guys for doing something interesting with the building.

If you are planning to go out with someone special, the place will be perfect. The old school rooms which they turned into wonderful sleeping rooms are amazing!
