“The second foggiest place in North America!”
Point Reyes is the windiest place on the Pacific Coast and the second foggiest place on the North American continent. Weeks of fog, especially during the summer months, frequently reduce visibility to hundreds of feet. The Point Reyes Headlands, which jut 10 miles out to sea, pose a threat to each ship entering or leaving San Francisco Bay. The historic Point Reyes Lighthouse warned mariners of danger for more than a hundred years. Here, you can see historic photographs of shipwrecks and lighthouse-keepers, and handle items on the touch table, including whale baleen. A display of local birds will introduce you to the birds you might see just off the cliffs. A small bookstore offers books, maps and other educational products. The Point Reyes Lighthouse, built in 1870, was retired from service in 1975 when the U.S. Coast Guard installed an automated light. They then transferred ownership of the lighthouse to the National Park Service, which has taken on the job of preserving this fine specimen of our heritage. All lighthouses in the United States are now automated because it is cheaper to let electronics do the work. Many decommissioned lighthouses were transformed into restaurants, inns or museums. The lighthouse at Point Reyes National Seashore is now a museum piece, where the era of the lightkeepers' lives, the craftsmanship and the beauty of the lighthouse are actively preserved. Make a stop here during the grey whale migration for a chance to see one of the splendid animals.
Tried to go but we were in a rush and it takes 45 minutes from the visitor center to get there. Make sure you alott enough time and go early. It closes at 4:30ish and they'll close it if wind speeds exceed 40mph
Even during summer it can be really windy and cold here. Make sure to bring a jacket/wind breaker. Very nice place to take photos. When you plan to go to the light house it can be really tiring to come back up and take those 308 steps. Still, very enjoyable.
My family and I made it to the lighthouse for some sightseeing while on a trip in California. It was a beautiful sight - just as windy as we heard, but we got a beautiful clear day with incredible visibility. I would advise that you check the days the lighthouse is actually open for visitors; we saw the lighthouse from above but weren't able to walk down and visit because it was closed. It's about a 45 minute drive from the Bear Creek visitors center, and about a half mile walk past the parking area but totally worth it!
It is a nice place to do some photography. But the place is closed Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.
Currently there is a shuttle that takes you from Drakes Beach to the lighthouse. By the time i got there, the shuttle already stopped running.
