Located in Plainfield, Vermont, Onion River Campground has unique site layouts that are not precisely defined but rather more like one big lawn to create a more social atmosphere than a conventional campground. For a more remote site and if a camper does not need electric and water hookups, you can find private hook ups in the apple orchard, next to the plum tree by the pond, or in the high meadow. There is so much beautiful nature here as well as the amenities you need. There is a great river access for fishing, swimming, tubing, and wading. If you are looking to escape to the great outdoors then this is the place for you! Camping at Onion River is respectful, kind and we generally have loads of fun. Good people, gardens, walking trails, picnic tables, and swingset are just a few of the things to look forward. Open May-October. Checkin after 3pm. Checkout at 12 pm. See you soon!

We almost turned around and looked for some place else, but found a spot with 30 amp and sewer and decided we'd try it for a night. Most sites that aren't seasonals are only 20 amp.
The two men who own it are wonderful, delightful, friendly, so happy to have people stay with them. Had to stay a few more nights even without WiFi or cell service at all. We would have extended our stay if we'd had either one.
Satellite (Direct TV) connected. Power and water pressure worked great. Showerhouse a bit iffy. I think there's a hostel by the office, or just a lot of young people renting the building. All very nice.
Entrance road is rough and narrow and some sites look very uneven. Our site however was completely level. The river runs behind the sites and some campers were catching good size trout. Large space behind sites with fire rings under the trees.
I'm very glad we didn't give up on this little park and we'd stay here again when in the area.

Had a nice time at the campground. Love that we had access to the river behind our site. The host was awesome. Would always come to our site to make sure everything was good. We didn’t use the bath house but it did looked clean. We will definitely stay there again.

I called ahead to ask questions about the campground, if they could accommodate us. She said yes, to make the reservation online. Got our confirmation, but we were not on the books when we got there. She found us a spot in a field in the grass anyway with 50 AMPS. It was not level at all. Then when we dumped the next morning, the sewage was full and spewed out on us until we back it down.
The campground had an amazing setting! Right on a cool river. And the staff was nice the one time we saw them. Just not great for a class a motor coach.

I didn’t stay here but they were on a path for boondocking. I called to ask if I could fill up water and they were very nice and allowed to fill up water at the campground. Cute place, with grassy camp spots next to a small river.

We had a great stop - very easy to enter, find the dumps station and water hose. Everyone (staff and campers) were very helpful. Our first dump stop!!
We stayed here 2 nights in July and it was absolutely beautiful wish we could come back in the fall. The people are amazingly friendly, not just the staff but everyone we saw.
They had blueberries you could pick (if ripe) and we saw a small apple orchard that were not ripe. Wonderful trails through the meadows, and a lovely “creek” with access for fishing. My kids had a blast exploring this campground.
We had water and electric in a large grass site. With the Passport America discount it was $20 a night. They have a dump station that was easy to use. We did not use the showers so I can’t comment on them other than they were there.
Side note this is about 30 min from the first Ben and Jerry’s factory (make sure to schedule a tour online) and 20 minutes from Montpellier.

We booked based upon Campendium recommendations but were very disapppointed. Unless you are a tent camper the Onion River is not in view and campground has not groomed along the shoreline or removed dead trees; thus it is hard to see the river unless you access it thru one of the tent sites. The biggest issue was loud traffic noise from US 2. I should have anticipated this by looking at a map, but missed it entirely. We found our close neighbors to be very nice young people. Park has so much potential but needs work. Too many campers for the little washroom/showers, in my opinion.

Hidden Gem! The driveway was a turn off onto a bridge. we weren't sure we were in the right place at first. We were met at the drive way by the owner and checked in. Escorted to an area of sites that were huge and allowed to pick one. the river was along the back of the sites and the kids loved playing in it. The highway was close, but there was no road noise. We had a camper, and our own bathroom. We did not use the facilities there. I can not comment on their condition. We had a fantastic stay. If we are out that way again, we would defiantly stay here again. ( wish I had taken picks)
