“Spring training home of the Oakland A's”
Constructed in 1964, "Phoenix Muni" as it is known throughout the Valley, was christened by none other than Willie Mayes, who hit the first spring training home run at the park. The first tenant of Phoenix Municipal Stadium was the New York Giants Triple-A team, the Phoenix Giants. The team was later renamed the Phoenix Firebirds. When the New York Giants moved from the Polo Grounds in New York to San Francisco, they brought with them the light poles for Muni, which still stand today. One of the many trademarks of the park is its accordion roof and stone-faced administrative building, which is known as "The Rock House". Muni also has the distinction as being the first air conditioned stadium. The original inner bowl seating was cooled through the floor from exterior evaporative coolers. Immediately following the 2003 spring training season, Muni underwent a $6.4 million dollar renovation. Some of the new features are a new 7,000 sq. ft. press box, new dugouts, better signage, and improved concourse areas with benches, shading and a historical timeline. The Oakland Athletics have been using Phoenix Muni for their spring training home since 1982.
