We live in Grand Jct so just zip over here to camp overnight. A great place to test out the camper in the spring. There is a truck stop gas station about 5 min away so if you forget something or your propane runs out you can go there easily. The park has a large grassy area that kids and dogs play in, there are simple toilets at one end of the campground and flush toilets and coin showers at the other end. There is a play ground for small kids. A fishing pond also although it smells a little. The river has a walking trail along it. Some people float the river in inflatable things, my kids love to dig in the mud and play along side the river but it is moving fairly fast so they don't play there by themselves! The noise from I70 is surprisingly minimal. There is a train track across the river so sometimes a train goes by, which we love but it can be fairly loud. I think the mountains around this park are spectacular so I like to sit and just watch the colors change while the sun goes down.
Easy access to Grand Jct. and Palisade. I work at the hospital and it is 15 min away by interstate. I think this would be an excellent stop if you are traveling as the access to 1 70 is so easy. I'm not sure I'd stay here for long stays but that may be just because it is practically home for us.
The rangers are super nice and helpful. Check in was a snap. Remember, you need a state park pass and pay the camping fee.
I get cell service here, not great internet if I remember correctly but the phone works.

We've passed this park a thousand times and never stopped, thinking it was too close to I-70. However, once in the park the interstate is hardly noticed. This park has spacious sites, picnic tables with shade covers and some full hookup sites. The river can't be seen from the campground but the canyon walls are beautiful nonetheless. A walking path along the river provides great river views.
Unfortunately the full hookup loop was closed when we visited on November 5th. In addition, the shower facilities and all water was shut off. These would have been nice details to know before we paid the $31/night fee. We arrived after hours and while a notice was posted about the full hook-up loop being closed, nothing was mentioned about closure of any other amenities.
My guess would be that Spring thru Fall is when this park shines. I would definitely return and give it another shot in that timeframe.

Mullins of goat heads being packed in from soles on shoes and poor dogs had feet full of these stickers and burrs. The ground is covered with them. They poked holes in air mattresses and got in the carpet in camper. Terrible

Don’t pay before you are sure you want to stay because they wo t refund your money 5 minutes after arrival. There is no shade, no phone or internet service and desert and dirty water as scenery.

When we stay at a state park I have a certain expectation that the park itself will be beautiful and peaceful. This part of James M. Robb state park is none of that (although I did hear from a friend that the part of this state park in Fruta is nice).
This park is too close to the highway, so lots of highway noise at night. It’s very desert like, dry, no pretty trees (although if you can get space 78 - it has a nice tree (assuming you have no height issues)).
There is no cell/internet access and we could not get any channels on our antenna.
There is a nice picnic area and a few trails to walk on (not pretty by any means). And if it’s not blistering hot, each site has a nice, covered picnic table.
I was not impressed with this campground and was sad that this is a state park.

My 4 year old and I spent a few nights here in May and it was perfect - stocked fishing ponds, playgrounds, nice grassy areas for playing, bike trails, clean bathroom. Easy trip to Fruita and Grand Junction. If you’re looking for total wilderness then maybe this isn’t the right fit, but the road noise was easily tuned out most of the time and the beauty of the surrounding cliffs more than made up for the occasional truck noise. Would happily stay here again.

We were traveling to Telluride and just needed a place to stop for the night. There’s a bunch of trees and camp sites are spaced out son no one is on top of you. Brought my dog to the lake for a nice swim. You can hear the highway but it’s not too bad. I’m usually a boondocker so I don’t usually stay in campgrounds but thought this was a relaxing place to stop for the night.

We stayed here one night in early July, easy access off of I-70, clean campground with great views. Campsite had electric hookup, covered table, fire ring, water available, showers, laundry, dump station, trash containers, and trail along the river. Great place to camp for the evening, clean and safe. There is some noise from the freeway and railroad, but barely noticable.

Very convenient location right off the freeway, but not road noise wasn’t bad. Gravel sites were pretty close to level. Campground is nestled up to the river bank with easy access to the water. Plenty of bugs when we camped in late-July.
