Le Page Park Campground

This really is a park for boaters. There are 22 campsites, and some 50 parking spaces for boats in the day area. I was next to the river, but here the river is close behind the dam and its just a lazy lake. The pull through sites are entirely asphalt, and the river bank is crushed stone, not grass. There is a picnic table and fire ring for each site, the dump station is free to guests, and all sites have water and power. The showers are push button..... you have to keep one hand on the button all the time or the water stops.

However, the biggest issue is the highway noise - the park is next to I-84 and the traffic sounds are amplified by the lake, also the bridge has a very annoying rumble when heavy trucks go across. Rate per night is with the Golden Pass discount.

Did not stay here, but I used the dump station. LePage Park is one of the few places along the Columbia River Gorge where you can get filtered, drinkable water to fill your rig. Both sewage dump and water fill together is $5.00. Open 7 days a week.

Beware of gas stations along the I-84 offering water with their dump stations, because it's not filtered, and very heavy in minerals and metals.

On a side note, Verizon 4G signal is very poor here, which is why we camp elsewhere.

LePage Park is right on the water with very easy access to I-84. The campground itself is very easy going and clean. The hosts at the gate allowed us to check in early, if the spot was vacant. We arrived at 12pm, and check-in/check out is at 2pm. Our site was still occupied, so we parked in the Day Use area, which had lots of space and greenery for my dog. By 2pm, we took over space #4 and set up camp.

I thought this was a great campground, and would be a great place to stop while traveling across Northern Oregon. The space was clean and the campers were all very quiet and respectful. The only noise we could hear were trains or cars driving across the bridge. In my opinion, living in the Portland metro area, the train and traffic were a nice ambient white noise, but can understand how it could bother others.

The sites are long and wide. All the sites on the water side are pull-throughs, while the sites backing the canyon are back-ins. The pull throughs were incredibly spacious. I'd estimate that they are 40' long before getting into the space of the next pull through. The pad itself is roughly 10' wide and then becomes a gravel area, equipped with a picnic table and a fire pit.

Lots of fishermen here. In fact, it seems like 3/4 of the people in this campground were towing a boat and either camped in a tent or were in a truck camper.

I'd 100% come back! It was clean and spacious. It felt really peaceful to me and I quite enjoyed having the trains/cars in the distance.

Lastly, I found that the cell service got stronger as you got closer to I-84. The Day Use area had anything between LTE and 4G. Site #4 was spotty, but was also at the middle of the site. If possible, get a spot closer to the beach/Day Use if you need cell service.

Really beautiful views if you can get a waterfront site.
Small park with RV and tent sites. Grassy area, small beach area and swim spot with boat docks. Good stop for a night or two but we wouldn’t stay longer, there is not much to do in the area without getting in the car.
Little to no cell service.
Vault toilets near RV sites and flush toilets near the park area. Main baths kind of grubby.
It got very windy at night so you really have to secure anything outside.
The park was very strict about dogs on leashes. Even when my dogs were on a leash the park hosts were around telling me that they had to be on a leash.
The best thing was the water view!

Price reflects back-in elec/water site (not waterfront) with NPS Sr. Pass. Great place to stay, I assume, if you plan to fish, which we didn’t. Sites are paved and level but close together. Very busy during our stay with lots of folks in and out. Not much to do in this area so bring your entertainment and supplies. Hosts were friendly, helpful and prompt with cleaning up vacated sites. However, bathroom/showers over near tent/day use area need to be updated and cleaned better. Accessible ladies’ shower had scalding water that could not be adjusted, chipping paint, insect debris and hairs. (Used to much better facilities from COE!) Cell service was adequate - not enough for streaming, though. Not sure we’d stay here again...😕

We got caught up in a dust/wind/smoke haze storm of sorts where visibility was less than 1/4 mile and the wind was fierce. We were planning to boondock but decided at the last minute we wanted electricity in case we wanted to run our AC (since it was too windy and dusty to open windows). We pulled into LePage Park, and they had only 2 spots left for the night.This was a Monday at the beginning of September. Back-in spots and pull-through spots with electric and water as well as some tent sites. A dump station located near the entrance. $22 per night, but our rate was $11 with the national park pass. It is a small park, right on the John Day river, which is an offshoot of the Columbia River. There is a small swimming area in the river. Excellent location. Cannot make a statement about noise because the wind was blowing hard, but it is right off of I-84. Spots can be reserved in advance. Sites were not quite level, but it didn't take much to level our Airstream.

Stayed during the beginning of August. Hot! Smoky! But the river was wonderful. Got the canoe out. Saw deer, beaver, geese and grumpy great blue herons! Only went on the John Day. Columbia is too big for us.

We expect good things from the Corps of Engineers. They did well here. We are not worried about cell coverage. Although we had some Verizon.

All sites are paved and level. No shade. Some pull through. 50 amp service helped keep the heat under control. Water was soft. Some freeway noise from I-84 going over the John Day River bridge. Did not bother us. Can’t comment on shower or restrooms. We used our own.

Went to farmstands on the Washington side of Hwy 97 and got the best supper of fresh fruits, bread, and veggies!

Went to Maryhill Art Museum.

We didn’t fish. Too hot to grill for us.

Wonderful geology. Plus, we paddled to deer and beavers. Great place, great and helpful hosts, could use some shade trees.

We will be back.

Stopped here to camp for the night on my way up to Idaho. Unfortunately it was closed. Gates locked and doesn’t look like anyone has been around to take care of the place for awhile.
Bummer. Maybe it’ll reopen for the spring/summer.

Last minute pick because we wanted electricity. Hot! Wished we had been told that the pull through sites were on the water/river when asked if we wanted a back in or pull through site. We chose the back-in because it $5 cheaper. It was clean, quiet, no privacy between sites, it was dry looking location.

We usually overnight here on our way to/from home. It is a small park, usually occupied by fisher/boaters. There is swim area, boat launch, and public restrooms, none of which we have used. We prefer the pull thru's. If none available, we dry camp in the public parking lot which is huge for the area. (Accessable even if campground is closed) There is some noise from the freeway or trains (no horns) but not enough to bother. We will continue to use this as a stopover on our way somewhere else.
