We headed to this area hoping to camp on the East Rim on Forest Road 611 but all of the spots were full, so we kept scouting the area and found this gem! The spot was level and one side was a lovely aspen forest. We took a walk a few times down Forest Road 400 and ended up finding a very pretty meadow. We never saw anyone else the entire time we were there (except an inquisitive deer), which is our favorite kind of camping. We can't wait to go back here!
This spot has an elevation of 9100 feet and we definitely noticed our shortness of breath when we were out hiking. Even our dog got worn out more quickly here!
NOTE: There is NO cell service out here at all (at least not on Verizon) which was exactly what we were looking for during this trip, but I realize that may not be ideal for many people.
Here's how to find the spot:
From Hwy 67 turn east onto Forest Road 611 and go 1.3 miles. There's a turnout here if you want to drop your trailer before proceeding (which is what we did). Turn right (south) onto Forest Road 610 and go 2.4 miles until you reach Forest Road 400. There was not a sign when we were there, so you'll definitely want to track your mileage to find it. Turn left (the only option) onto Forest Road 400 and go about 100 yards up the hill. There's a small spot on the left, but we chose spot C on the right. There's definitely room here for 2 rigs if you need it. If you have a trailer I do NOT recommend proceeding beyond this point, however, if you're a tent camper there are some nice hidden spots further down Forest Road 400 that are worth exploring!
